The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is the peak body representing the Muslim community in Australia. AFIC was established over 50 years ago and has evolved throughout that time to respond to the needs of the Muslim community in Australia. It has assisted member organisations to establish Mosques, community centres and other institutions across the country, particularly in remote a

nd regional areas that would not otherwise have the capacity to provide these much needed community assets. Additionally:
• AFIC has been at the forefront of establishing Islamic education in Australia over the last 25yrs and has paved the way for many other community groups to establish their own schools and places of learning.
• AFIC is the main certifier for the Halal industry in Australia providing certainty for the Muslim community in relation to the food and other goods that have been prepared in accordance with Islamic principles. AFIC Extends Condolences on the Passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) extends its deepest condolences on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir and former Emir of the State of Qatar.

AFIC offers its sincere sympathies to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family, the Government and people of Qatar, and the Qatari community in Australia at this time of grief and mourning.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani will be remembered as a transformative leader who guided Qatar through a period of significant national development, regional influence and international engagement. His leadership helped shape modern Qatar and strengthen its presence on the global stage.

AFIC President Dr Rateb Jneid said:
“On behalf of AFIC and the Australian Muslim community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family, and the people of Qatar on the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.”

“At this solemn time, we remember his service to his nation and his contribution to Qatar’s development and standing in the Muslim world and beyond. We pray that Allah, the Most Merciful, forgives him, grants him mercy, and admits him into Jannatul Firdaus.”

AFIC also acknowledges the close and longstanding ties between the Australian Muslim community and the Qatari community and stands with them during this period of sorrow.

We ask Allah (SWT) to shower His mercy upon Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, to grant patience and strength to his family and loved ones, and to bring comfort to the people of Qatar.

Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him shall we return.

AFIC Commemorates the 31st Anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) solemnly commemorates the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, one of the darkest chapters in modern European history and a lasting wound for Bosnian Muslims and the global Muslim community.

On 11 July 1995, more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered in and around Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite the area having been declared a United Nations “safe area”. The genocide remains a devastating reminder of the consequences of hatred, racism, dehumanisation and the failure of the international community to protect innocent lives.

Today, AFIC stands in solidarity with the survivors, the families of the victims, and the Bosnian Australian community as they honour the memory of those who were brutally taken from their loved ones. We pray that Allah (SWT) grants His infinite mercy upon the martyrs, comforts their families, and strengthens all those who continue to seek truth, justice and healing.

AFIC President Dr Rateb Jneid said the anniversary is a solemn reminder that remembrance must be tied to responsibility.

“Srebrenica was the result of hatred, dehumanisation and the world’s refusal to act with moral courage when innocent people were in danger. As we remember the victims, we must also confront the conditions that allow such atrocities to occur.”

“For Muslim communities, Srebrenica is a deeply painful reminder of where unchecked Islamophobia, racism and political indifference can lead. ‘Never Again’ must never be reduced to a slogan. It must be a commitment to justice, truth and the protection of human dignity wherever people are threatened.”

The lessons of Srebrenica remain as relevant today as ever. We must collectively reject all forms of hatred, discrimination, racism and Islamophobia, while promoting justice, mutual respect and the protection of human dignity.

Remembering Srebrenica is not only about honouring the past. It is about recognising the warning signs of hatred in the present, challenging dehumanising rhetoric wherever it appears, and ensuring that the international community never again stands by while innocent people are targeted because of who they are.

AFIC reaffirms its commitment to working with communities, governments and faith leaders to foster peace, strengthen social cohesion, and uphold the universal values of justice, compassion and human rights.

As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, AFIC encourages all Australians to learn from history, stand against hatred in all its forms, and work together to build a future founded on peace, understanding and respect for every human being.

“Never Again” must be more than words. It must remain our shared commitment and collective responsibility.

The Power of Truth: A Lesson That Transforms Hearts
Truthfulness is one of the greatest qualities a person can possess. It builds trust, strengthens character and can become a means of guidance for others.

One of the most well-known stories connected to the life of the great scholar Abdul Qadir al-Jilani tells of the power of a sincere commitment to truth.

According to the narration, when Abdul Qadir was still a young boy, his mother sent him to Baghdad to seek knowledge. Before his journey, she sewed forty gold dinars into the lining of his clothing and gave him a simple but powerful instruction:
"My son, always hold firmly to the truth and never lie."

During the journey, the caravan was attacked by a group of robbers who took the belongings of the travellers.

One of the robbers approached the young boy and asked him:
"Do you have anything with you?"
The boy replied calmly: "Yes, I have forty gold dinars."

The robber thought the boy was joking and informed the leader of the group. The leader asked him again: "Do you really have forty dinars?"
The boy answered: "Yes."

They searched his clothing and found the gold exactly where he had said it was.
The leader was amazed and asked: "Why did you tell us when you could have hidden it?"
The boy replied: "My mother told me never to lie, and I do not want to break my promise to her."

These words had a profound effect on the leader. He was moved to tears and said:
"You fear breaking your promise to your mother, while I have not feared breaking my covenant with Allah."

The story goes on to say that the leader repented and many of those with him followed him in repentance.

Although the details of this story are not established as a verified historical event, its message has continued to inspire generations because it reflects a timeless truth: sincere character can have an impact far beyond what we imagine.

Lessons from the Story
• Truthfulness can be a means of guidance. A single honest word may touch a heart and lead someone toward what is right.
• Good upbringing leaves a lasting legacy. The values taught by parents can shape a person’s choices throughout life.
• Character is a powerful form of دعوت. People are often influenced by the sincerity and actions they see before they are moved by words.

The importance of truthfulness is firmly established in the authentic teachings of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as truthful. Falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A person continues to tell lies until he is recorded with Allah as a liar." (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

This hadith reminds us that truthfulness is not merely good manners; it is a path that brings a person closer to Allah and leads to eternal success.

A Brief Historical Note
This story is widely shared for its moral lessons, though scholars have noted that it is not established through an authentic chain of transmission. It is therefore best read as a reminder of the value of truthfulness rather than as a confirmed historical account.

قوة الصدق: درس يغيّر القلوب
الصدق من أعظم الصفات التي يمكن أن يتحلى بها الإنسان. فهو يبني الثقة، ويقوّي الشخصية، وقد يكون سببًا في هداية الآخرين.

ومن أشهر القصص المرتبطة بحياة العالم الجليل عبد القادر الجيلاني قصة تُروى عن أثر الالتزام الصادق بالحق والصدق.

تُروى القصة أن عبد القادر الجيلاني كان لا يزال غلامًا صغيرًا عندما أرسلته والدته إلى بغداد لطلب العلم. وقبل سفره، خاطت له أربعين دينارًا من الذهب في بطانة ثوبه، وأوصته بوصية بسيطة لكنها عظيمة:

"يا بني، الزم الصدق ولا تكذب أبدًا."
وفي الطريق، اعترض قطاع من اللصوص القافلة، وأخذوا أموال المسافرين وممتلكاتهم. فجاء أحد اللصوص إلى الغلام وسأله:
"هل معك شيء؟"
فأجابه الغلام بكل هدوء:
"نعم، معي أربعون دينارًا من الذهب."
فظن اللص أن الغلام يمزح، فأخبر قائد العصابة. فسأله القائد مرة أخرى:
"أحقًا معك أربعون دينارًا؟"
فقال الغلام:
"نعم."
ففتشوه، فوجدوا الدنانير في المكان الذي أخبرهم عنه تمامًا.
فتعجب القائد وسأل:
"لماذا أخبرتنا بها، وكان بإمكانك أن تخفيها؟"
فقال الغلام:
"إن أمي أوصتني ألا أكذب، ولا أريد أن أخون عهدي معها."
كان لهذه الكلمات أثر عظيم في نفس قائد اللصوص، فبكى وقال:
"أنت تخاف أن تخون عهد أمك، وأنا لا أخاف أن أخون عهد الله."
وتذكر الرواية أن قائد العصابة تاب، وتاب معه كثير ممن كانوا معه.

ومع أن تفاصيل هذه القصة ليست ثابتة بوصفها حادثة تاريخية موثقة، فإن رسالتها بقيت تلهم الناس عبر الأجيال؛ لأنها تعبّر عن حقيقة خالدة: أن الأخلاق الصادقة قد يكون لها أثر يتجاوز ما نتخيله.

دروس من القصة:

• الصدق قد يكون سببًا في الهداية. فكلمة صادقة واحدة قد تلامس قلبًا وتكون سببًا في تغييره.
• التربية الصالحة تترك أثرًا عميقًا. فالقيم التي يغرسها الوالدان في أبنائهما قد ترافقهم طوال حياتهم.
• حسن الخلق من أقوى وسائل الدعوة. فالناس يتأثرون بما يرونه من صدق وإخلاص قبل أن يتأثروا بما يسمعونه من كلام.

إن فضل الصدق ومكانته ثابتان في تعاليم الإسلام الصحيحة. فقد قال النبي ﷺ:

"إن الصدق يهدي إلى البر، وإن البر يهدي إلى الجنة، وإن الرجل ليصدق حتى يكون صِدِّيقًا. وإن الكذب يهدي إلى الفجور، وإن الفجور يهدي إلى النار، وإن الرجل ليكذب حتى يُكتب عند الله كذابًا."
(رواه البخاري ومسلم)

وهذا الحديث يذكّرنا بأن الصدق ليس مجرد خُلُق حسن، بل هو طريق يقرب العبد من الله ويقوده إلى النجاح والفلاح.

تنبيه تاريخي مختصر:

هذه القصة مشهورة ويكثر تداولها لما تحمله من معانٍ تربوية، إلا أن العلماء ذكروا أنها لم تثبت بسند تاريخي صحيح. لذلك يُستفاد منها كتذكرة بقيمة الصدق والعبرة منها، لا على أنها حادثة تاريخية مؤكدة.
