Today, after more than seven wonderful years of dedication, we bid farewell to our dear Marina Capponi, who in her time with us as Programming Director has created so many meaningful and magical experiences at the synagogue, bringing people together to learn, celebrate and experience the richness and joys of the synagogue community.

Marina has been a warm and welcoming presence at our events, greeting and engaging with everyone in her signature way. We are so grateful for her years of service, and we wish her every blessing for the future.

Thank you, Marina ❤️

On Tuesday evening, we assembled in the Neuweg for our 2026 Annual General Meeting, the final of these yearly gatherings for Grant McCorquodale as our President, who concluded his term as leader of our board and marked 16 years of community leadership across Emanuel School and Emanuel Synagogue.

Grant was elected as a Board Director on 25 May 2021 and, just two years later, as President on 23 May 2023. Over the course of his presidency, he shepherded our congregation through some of the most challenging times – COVID, major building works, the aftermath of October 7th, the rise of antisemitism, and the impact of Bondi – and led projects of lasting impact, including raising $10M in the Heritage Sanctuary capital appeal that resulted in the glorious restoration of one of our most-used spaces, establishing the Emanuel Synagogue Foundation and now the Jeffrey B. Kamins OAM Endowment Fund to secure the future of our congregation, reuniting the Synagogue with Emanuel Woollahra Preschool, and much more. Grant has represented us and advocated for us at the highest levels, giving us a voice and an active presence in the wider Jewish community and Australian society more broadly. In addition to all of this, over the last year, he has navigated a landmark transition in leadership with our senior rabbi and championed a project of such profound artistic merit that we will delight in revealing on 21 June at the celebration of Rabbi Kamins.

Grant achieved all of that with his signature courage, conviction, heart and integrity.

As a small gesture of our heartfelt appreciation for his service and commitment, we presented Grant with a tallit featuring the vibrant tartan of the McCorquodale Clan, a perfect match for his kippah. Pulling this off was only possible with the help of Grant’s wife, the incredible Ilana McCorquodale, who, together with their beautiful family, has supported and encouraged Grant throughout this important mission with us.

Also at Grant’s side through this time was our Vice President, Ian Rathmell, and at the conclusion of the AGM, the board unanimously voted Ian as Grant’s successor.

We are proud to announce that Ian Rathmell is the President of Emanuel Synagogue.

Ian has been a fixture at Emanuel since he first arrived in Australia, and in that time has given so selflessly to our community, including as Treasurer on our board and as a proud representative of our congregation in LGBTQ spaces. Ian’s term has now officially commenced, and we look forward to embarking on this new adventure together.

Chag Shavuot Sameach! חג שבועות שמח

*Worldviews and ways of life in Australia*

ANU researchers are exploring how perceptions and ways of thinking (i.e. worldviews) relate to experiences and ways of living (i.e. participation and inclusion) in Australia.
They are seeking respondents for their online anonymous 15-20 min survey from any and all adult Australian citizens and permanent residents living in Australia.
Please make sure you are represented in this meaningful research by completing this fascinating survey and also forwarding it to any others who may be interested. There are $100 vouchers to be won if you complete it!
Access the survey here (https://anu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Ao5q9gu3ysrbVQ) in English or Tiếng Việt or ਪੰਜਾਬੀ or 简体中文 or 繁體中文 or العربية.
Any questions can be emailed to the researchers ([email protected]). Thanks so much!

20/05/2026

After approaching the issue with an open mind and an open heart, Rabbi Rafi Kaiserblueth realised he had been wrong about same-sex marriage. This evening at Tikkun Leil Shavuot, he will share his journey to that understanding on a panel with his fellow rabbis, who will also be revealing what they were wrong about.

After mandatory dairy dinner and cheesecake breaks, Rabbi Kaiserblueth will offer a deep dive on another very interesting topic. Head to emanuel.org.au to find out what that is and register to join us.

At 10.30 pm on Thursday night, following a compulsory cheesecake break, Joseph Constable will have us enthralled by a study session you don’t want to miss: “God was wrong about the Israelites”. A midrash study of Eikah Rabbah 24 where Rachel brings God to tears with her story about Leah’s marriage to Jacob.

This continues the theme of this year’s Tikkun Leil Shavuot, “I WAS WRONG” and invites us to see situations from a range of perspectives with an openness and willingness to change our minds.

Join us from 5.30 pm for soup, service, panel discussions, dairy delights and deep dives. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Register at emanuel.edu.au to reserve your spot.

This Shavuot, Rabbi George Mordecai will explain how he came to realise he was wrong about God, as he joins our other rabbis on our panel that reveals all the things they’ve been wrong about.

The rest of the evening will continue with deep dives in the same vein and include lots of opportunities to connect, learn and enjoy a dairy feast care of Nora’s Kitchen.

Join us for Tikkun Leil Shavuot on Thursday 21 May from 5.30 pm. Find the full speaker lineup, program schedule and RSVP at emanuel.org.au or at the link in bio.
