St John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church

St John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church “Не избегавај Цркву! Нема у свету ништа јаче од ње. Она је твоја нада, у њој је твоје спасење”!

The Church is not a man made invention or institution founded by humans. If you want to call yourself Christian believe that out of love God established the Church and by his love He still upholds it and leads it. If it was up to us it wouldn’t have been around for more than 2000 years. Our parish (Greek word PAROCHIA means stranger to the world) is under the canonical jurisdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand and His Grace bishop Siluan.

Today on the 15th Sunday after Pentecost we celebrated the Holy New Martyrs of Jasenovac with the Divine Liturgy. Fr Ljupko Čubrilović presided, concelebrating with Fr Nikola Bilić and Fr Branko Bosančić.

Following the Liturgy, we shared lunch together and had a presentation of Fr Nikola’s newly published book, „Кроз дедине сузе“ (Through Grandfather’s Tears), a deeply personal work born from the loss of his daughter.

Through the generosity of our parishioners and guests, $1,350 was raised, with all proceeds going to support children in Kosovo and Metohija.

Holy New Martyrs of Jasenovac, pray to God for us!

This Tuesday, our Bible Study & Youth Group will take a different approach than normal, as we will come together for a special evening of film and theological discussion.

We’ll watch Mike Leigh’s 1996 film ‘Secrets & Lies’, winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes and highly acclaimed by critics and audiences. The film explores profound human questions surrounding truth, shame, family, motherhood, forgiveness, confession, reconciliation, and our need for genuine communion with one another.

Following the film, we’ll gather for a discussion through an Orthodox perspective, reflecting on the ways its themes intersect with our understanding of truth, sin, grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Meet us at the church hall for a 530pm start!

All are welcome to join the film and discussions. ☦️

On Sunday, 30 August, we gathered at our church to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on the 13th Sunday after Pentecost.

Later that day, a group of our parishioners, at the kind invitation of the Holy Dormition Russian Orthodox Parish in Wollongong, joined their community for their festal celebration and lunch. It was a joy to share in their celebration and a particular honour to meet His Grace Archbishop George of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.

We thank Fr Dionysius, John Chichkan and the entire Holy Dormition parish community for their warm hospitality and Christian fellowship.

May the Most Holy Theotokos continue to protect us and unite us in her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

On Saturday evening, we began celebrating a very special milestone — 50 years since the consecration of our St John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church in Wollongong.

Around 200 people gathered at Panorama House for a wonderful evening filled with music, joy, friendship and a true sense of community. A special thank you to Šampioni Orchestra, our generous sponsors Hansen & Cole Funerals, our friends from St John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church in Dapto, and everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so memorable.

Our Jubilee celebrations continue on Sunday, 27 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, when His Eminence Metropolitan Siluan will celebrate the Divine Liturgy and present honours of the Serbian Orthodox Church to members of our community.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our parish story — past and present. Here’s to 50 years of faith, love and community, and to the years ahead! ☦️❤️

☦️ The Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord

Today we celebrated the Divine Liturgy and blessed the fruits of the earth. As Christ was transfigured on Mount Tabor, may we too open ourselves to His grace, that our lives, the work of our hands, and all creation may be transfigured in Him.

We hope everyone takes the chance to reflect on this important Feast day of the Church, and celebrates alongside loved ones.

Have a blessed remainder of your week :)
