This weekend we celebrate the patronal feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, when the whole diocese looks to Mary, Mother of the Church.

Mary received her Son with ready obedience and an undivided heart. She pondered in her heart the mystery of Christ, and she continues to share as a mother in the joys and struggles of our families, parishes, schools and communities. Through her Immaculate Heart she draws us ever closer to Jesus.

On this feast, we confidently entrust the Diocese of Wollongong to her care. You are warmly invited to pray the diocesan prayer with us:

Mother of the Redeemer, in this diocese dedicated to your Immaculate Heart, with great joy we call you blessed.

In order to carry out his providential plan of salvation, God the Father chose you before the creation of the world. You believed in his love and obeyed his word.

The Son of God desired you for his mother when he became man to save the human race.

You received him with ready obedience and undivided heart. The Holy Spirit loved you as his mystical spouse and he filled you with singular gifts.

You allowed yourself to be led by his hidden and powerful action.

We entrust to you the diocese which acknowledges you and invokes you under the title of your Immaculate Heart.

On earth you preceded the Church in the pilgrimage of faith: guide us as we walk in your footsteps, comfort us in our difficulties and trials, help us to reach God.

To you, Mother of the Church, we confidently entrust our bishop, our priests, deacons and religious, our families, and ourselves.

Give us the light of true wisdom, a wisdom to be found only in your Son as you told us at Cana: "Do whatever he tells us." Enable us all to meet him who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Sustain us, O Virgin Mary, on our journey of faith, and obtain for us the grace of eternal salvation.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother of God and our mother, Mary!

Since 1848, St Francis Xavier Cathedral has stood at the heart of Wollongong as a place of prayer, worship, celebration, and community. For generations, it has witnessed baptisms, weddings, funerals, ordinations, and countless moments of faith that have shaped the life of our region.

Today, this treasured heritage building requires significant conservation works to preserve its historic character and ensure it remains a place of welcome and worship for future generations.

The National Trust of Australia (NSW) โ€“ St Francis Xavier Cathedral Wollongong Conservation Appeal has been established to support the Cathedral Exterior Renewal Project. This major conservation initiative will include the restoration of stonework, repairs to windows and doors, renewal of gutters and downpipes, external painting, lighting improvements, resurfacing works, and the preservation of important memorial areas surrounding the Cathedral.

These works are essential to protect the Cathedral from further deterioration and to conserve one of Wollongong's most important religious and heritage landmarks.

Every contribution will make a difference. Whether you are a parishioner, former parishioner, visitor, school family, or someone who values Wollongong's rich history, your support will help preserve this sacred place for generations yet to come.

This weekend we acknowledge and thank Denis Bristow for his dedicated service as Sacristan of St Francis Xavier Cathedral.

Denis has worked quietly behind the scenes, preparing the Cathedral for countless Masses, liturgies, weddings, funerals and special celebrations. His care, attention to detail, generosity of spirit and deep love for the Church have helped ensure that our worship is conducted with dignity and reverence.

The ministry of a sacristan is often unseen, yet it is essential to the life of the parish. Denis has faithfully carried out this role with commitment, humility and devotion, serving both clergy and parishioners alike.

On behalf of Fr Bernard, the clergy, staff and parishioners of Lumen Christi Parish, we extend our sincere gratitude to Denis for his many years of faithful service and wish him every blessing for the future.

This important time provides an opportunity for our priests and clergy to come together for prayer, formation, reflection, pastoral discussion and fraternity as they continue their ministry across the Diocese.

Congratulations to the 72 young people from Lumen Christi Parish who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend.

It was a joyful celebration of faith as our candidates were sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit surrounded by their families, sponsors, teachers, catechists, and parish community.

A sincere thank you to Bishop Brian Mascord for being with us and for conferring the Sacrament of Confirmation upon our candidates.

Please continue to keep these young people in your prayers as they continue their journey of faith.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Fr John Pickering OFM, who died peacefully on the evening of 6 May 2026.

Since 1983, Fr John faithfully served as Chaplain to the Spanish Community in the Diocese of Wollongong, offering decades of devoted pastoral care, compassion, and commitment. His presence and ministry have been a great blessing to so many.
