Happy Ascension Day!

“Grant, we pray, almighty God, that as we believe your only begotten Son to have ascended into heaven, so we may also in heart and mind there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (AAPB 1978)

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1–4 ESV)

⏩️ NEW CITY CATECHISM Question 14:

Did God create us unable to keep his law?

☑️ Answer:

No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law.

📖 Scripture:

Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

🙏 Prayer:

Merciful Lord, we are corrupt in our very natures. We are sons and daughters of the first Adam who desire what you forbid. Give us a new nature through new birth in Christ, the second Adam, that we might be able to keep your law in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

🎉 Christ our Refuge Youth.

🏓 CORY are gathering the grade 6-12s of Christ our Refuge and their mates across the following Friday nights in term two: 8 May, 22 May, 5 Jun, and 22 Jun.

🤩 Our Friday Nights include activities, dinner, bible, prayer, and hanging out with other youth. 6:30-8:30pm.

🙌🏽 CORY will meet again on the following Sundays in term two: 3 May, 17 May, 31 May, and 14 Jun.

🎸 Our Sunday morning includes snacks, activities, Bible, and prayer straight after our morning church service. 10:30-11am.

⏩️ NEW CITY CATECHISM Question 13:

Can anyone keep the law of God perfectly?

☑️ Answer:

Since the fall, no mere human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly, but consistently breaks it in thought, word, and deed.

📖 Scripture:

Romans 3:10–12

None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.

🙏 Prayer:

Holy God, left to our own devices, we transgress your law at every turn. We have no defense, but must plead guilty before your throne of judgment. Your law condemns us and cuts through our pretensions to righteousness, convincing us that we desperately need a Savior. Amen.

// JESUS IS… who he says he is

Who is Jesus?

Some say a good man with wise teachings. Others say he's irrelevant. Some say he's a human-made myth. Others say he's worthy of their worship.

The good news is — we don't have to guess. Jesus has spoken. In John's Gospel, Jesus makes a series of bold "I am" claims about himself. And one in particular cuts through: "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." (John 8:58)

It's a clear echo of God's words to Moses in Exodus 3:14 — "I AM WHO I AM." Jesus is claiming to be the God who revealed himself to Moses and existed before Abraham. The crowd knew exactly what he meant — they picked up stones to kill him in the very next verse.

Who is Jesus? The great God-man. And in him we find the deepest longings of our souls — bread, light, truth, and life.
