A Special Welcome…

We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, gay, filthy rich or dirt poor. We extend a special welcome to those who are crying newborns, or as skinny as a rake, or who could afford to lose a few pounds ...

We welcome you if you can sing like Pavarotti, or those who can't carry a note in a bucket). You're welcome here if you're “just browsing”, jus

t woke up, or just got out of prison. We don't care if you're more Christian than the President of the Uniting Church, or haven't been in church since little Jack's christening. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but haven't grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome_ keep-fit mums; football dads; starving artists; tree huggers; latte sippers; vegetarians; and junk food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or who are still addicted. We welcome you if you're having problems or you're down in the dumps, or if you don't like organized religion - we've been there too! We welcome you if you’re new to Australia and still trying to work out what this crazy country is on about. We’re wondering too. If you blew all your money on the horses, you're welcome here. We offer a welcome to those who think the earth is flat, who work too hard, or don't work, who can't spell, or who are here because grandma is in town and wanted to go to church. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, or both. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down your throat as a kid, or who got lost on the Westgate Bridge and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts ... and you!

In the half light, an amazing International Latin Jazz concert by the Danilo Rojas Quintet in our Church last Saturday night. Danilo on the piano, famous in Bolivia, now lives and works in Williamstown. He has played all over the world but this was his first concert in Williamstown. Keep alert for when he next plays in Williamstown, perhaps later this year. Sarah de la Cerda is the singer.

Chamber Philharmonia Cologne played in our Electra St Church Tuesday night. There was a delightful treat of a not often heard "Salzburg Symphony" by Mozart. The ensemble played "Spring" from Vivaldi's "Seasons", and a Vivaldi Cello Concerto featuring world class cellist Dmitrij Gornowskij. The virtuosic violin of soloist Sergey Didorenko featured in Gypsy Airs by Sarasate. The world class baritone Jaime Roda Segrelles featured in a beautiful and warm aria from Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah".

Chamber Philharmonia Cologne concludes their Australia tour with a concert at Scotts Church Melbourne on March 18. We are looking forward to their return to Electra Street next summer.

It has been a week since the horrendous massacre committed by a father and son, aimed at killing Jewish people who were doing nothing more than celebrating their faith at Bondi Beach.

Like most of the country, we at the Uniting Church Williamstown are horrified by this act and unequivocally condemn all forms of violence, antisemitism, anti-Islamic hatred, and any vilification based on religion or race.

Today, in remembrance and solidarity with the victims and their families, we lit candles and stood with our Jewish brothers and sisters in a moment of reflection.

Shalom, shalom.
