On this feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, following yesterday’s Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we pause to immerse ourselves in our Mother's anguish at the foot of that cross.

The 7 graces of devotion to Our Lady’s sorrows include this one: ‘I have obtained this Grace from my Divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son and I will be their eternal consolation and joy.’

Today, and as we do throughout September, we honour Mary’s strength and the love she gave to her son, which flows on to all of us.

On 15 August, the Church celebrates Christ taking his Mother up to Heaven, a dogma defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. In Australia this day is a holy day of obligation. Holy Days of Obligation are special occasions on which Catholics are obliged to attend Mass.

At St Mary's Mass times for the Assumption will be as follows:
- Vigil Mass (14/8/2026): 7:00pm (Led by the Black Nazarene Community)
- Mass of the Day (15/8/2026): 10:00am

This week is National Vocations Awareness Week, where the Church is invited to participate by promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life and by renewing prayers and support for those who are discerning these states of life within the Church. It is also a time to pray for those who are married, or considering marriage as their vocation, as all vocations, whether the priesthood, religious life, dedicated single life, or married life, are a call from God to love and serve him and the Church in that unique way. For “...all Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity.” 65 All are called to holiness: “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (CCC 2013)
Let us continue to pray for members of the Church to discover and live their vocation with generosity, and self-giving love, and ask for the intercession of St John Mary Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, whose feast we celebrate today.

Today is the feast day of the patron saint of parish priests, Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney – known as John Vianney.

The farmer’s son was born at the beginning of the French revolution and was forced to take his first Communion and Confession in secret while France was under the anti-clerical ‘reign of terror’. He never forgot the heroism of the nuns and priests who risked everything for their faith.

He was renowned as a confessor and for performing healing miracles. His church in the village of Ars in eastern France became a pilgriamge site in the mid-19th century as tens of thousands sought to make their confession to him.
