This morning, the World Council of Churches expressed grave concern over escalating military attacks in the Middle East and called for an immediate cessation of violence, the protection of civilian populations, and renewed diplomatic engagement.

As part of the global fellowship of churches, the Uniting Church in Australia stands alongside our ecumenical partners in prayerful solidarity. We share the deep concern for the safety of civilians, the stability of the region, and the urgent need for de-escalation and dialogue.

In a time when rhetoric intensifies and fear spreads quickly, I invite the Uniting Church to be what we are called to be โ€” a praying people. We hold before God all whose lives are endangered, and we pray for communities here in Australia who are watching these events with deep concern for loved ones.

We recommit ourselves to being people of restraint, reconciliation and hope.

God of Abraham and Sarah,
God of Hagar and Ishmael,
God of Isaac and Rebekah,
God revealed to us in Jesus Christ,

We bring before you the lands where our faith was born,
now shaken by escalating violence and deep uncertainty.

We pray for the people of Iran,
for the people of Israel,
and for all across the region living tonight with fear.

We pray for children woken by sirens,
for families seeking safety,
for those carrying grief, anger and anxiety.

Prince of Peace,
interrupt the cycle of violence.
Protect civilian life on every side.
Grant leaders wisdom and restraint.
Turn hearts from further destruction toward dialogue and de-escalation.

Call all nations to act with responsibility,
with care for human life,
and with respect for the obligations of international law.

Spirit of the Living God,
comfort those in Australia whose loved ones are in harmโ€™s way.
Strengthen Jewish, Muslim, Iranian, Arab and Christian communities who may feel vulnerable or unsettled.
Guard us from antisemitism, from Islamophobia, and from every form of hatred that rises in times of conflict.
Make your Church a place of safety, compassion and steady hope.

May fear give way to understanding.
May violence give way to courage for peace.
May justice and mercy meet.

In the name of Christ, who is our peace.
Amen.

The Elders in our church sent the following message to local Jewish communities in Perth:

Dear Friends,

In the wake of the horrific events at Bondi, we stand with you in grief and solidarity.

The pain felt across the Jewish community is shared by all who cherish life, peace, and dignity.

Here in Perth, we hold your congregations in our hearts.

We affirm that your courage in gathering, praying, and bearing witness is a light against the darkness of violence and fear.

May the memory of those lost be a blessing, and may your synagogues remain places of safety, hope, and resilience.

We commit ourselves to walk alongside you, ensuring that no act of hatred will silence the bonds of community and faith.

With deep respect and unwavering support,
Church of Christ Wembley Downs

Today our hearts break alongside the Jewish community across Australia and beyond, and all those impacted, as we process the news of the terrible act of violence at the Hanukkah by the Sea celebration on Bondi Beach. This was a moment of worship, meant to be filled with community light and song - transformed into unimaginable tragedy. Innocent people were killed, including children, with dozens more injured.

We hold in our hearts the families, congregations, and communities now carrying grief, fear, and heartbreak, and we give thanks for all those offering care, protection, and compassion in its aftermath.

โ€œIn Christ, we are bound to one another beyond culture, creed, or distance. We condemn any worldview that would seek to dehumanise another person or justify violence against a people. We are called to be people of a love that refuses to be constrained. To echo the words of the former New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, in the wake of another tragedy, "We are one, they are us". This loss and violence grieves us to our core. There is no moral, political, or religious excuse for hatred that leads to harm.โ€ Gershon Nimbalker, Common Grace National Director

In the midst of this horror, we give thanks for the courageous act of a bystander who intervened to restrain one of the attackers, undoubtedly saving lives. His bravery is a powerful reminder that love of neighbour can break through even the darkest moments.

Let us pray:
God of mercy and peace,
We come before you in our heartbreak and grief.
God, we know you are near to the broken-hearted.
We pray for the Jewish community across our nation, for those grieving, those injured, and those living with fear and shock.
We hold before you the families who have lost loved ones, and all whose lives have been upended by this violence.
We give thanks for emergency services and first responders, and ask for strength, protection, and care for them as they serve.
And Lord, we pray for our nation, that hatred would not have the final word, that love would be stronger than fear, and that your light would shine in the darkness.
Amen.
