The history of St Joseph's Church, Warrnambool

Until 1849 there was no permanent place of worship for Catholics in Warrnambool. Initially a small wooden building erected on the corner of Kelp and Timor Streets served as the Church for the Catholics of Warrnambool. Dean Thomas Slattery, the first Parish Priest of Warrnambool, came to live permanently in the city in 1853. In 1856 the foundation sto

ne of the present parish hall on the corner of Kepler Street and Raglan Parade was laid by Bishop Goold from Melbourne. The building was used as a school and Church for the increasing Catholic community of Warrnambool. By 1867 it was becoming apparent that this building was also too small for the congregation and plans for a new Church were made. The Church was built in two stages and the present St Joseph's was finally completed on the 23rd September 1889. This Gathering Space has certainly complemented parish life.

The Most Holy Trinity
Today we celebrate the feast of The Most Holy Trinity - Father, Son
and Holy Spirit described in ancient tradition as:
• the One who loves … Father
• the Beloved One … Son
• the Love between them … Holy Spirit
It celebrates the mystery of God’s self-revelation:
- through the experiences of the people of Israel
- the disciples of Jesus and the
- and the Christian people since Pentecost.
This feast celebrates our God who always was, is and will be for ever, who calls us into a loving relationship which is beyond anything we can imagine.

The Ascension of the Lord - This weekend, Bishop Mark is present in our parish as our shepherd and servant. It’s not an official visit as such but a way a of getting a feel of the diocese.
The following excerpt is from his address on the occasion of his
ordination and installation as the 9th Bishop of Ballarat:
- I ask you to teach me how to be your bishop. Every time I have
begun a new appointment, I have said to the community that you
are the people whom God has given me to love. As I begin this
new ministry among you, I say the same to the whole diocese,
people and priests of Ballarat – You are the people whom God has
given me to love.
- He concludes his remarks by quoting Pope Leo XIV:
‘The supreme rule in the Church is love. No one is called to
dominate; all are called to serve. No one should impose his or her
own ideas; we must all listen to one another. No one is excluded;
we are all called to participate. No one possesses the whole truth;
we must all humbly seek it and seek it together...’

6th Sunday of Easter

Mother’s Day Prayer
Loving God, we pray for our mothers,
who have given us life and love,
that we may show them reverence and love,
and others who show us a mother’s love.
We pray for adoptive mothers and for the women
who wish to give birth but experience challenges,
that they know your care.
We pray for mothers who have lost a child through death,
that their faith may give them hope,
and their family and friends support and console them.
We pray for those who wish to serve as mothers,
but are not able to do so, that they know your comfort.
We pray for mothers who have died,
that God may bring them into the joy of his kingdom. Amen

4th Sunday of Easter
On the weekend of the 16/17th May, Bishop Mark will visit our
parish as our chief shepherd and servant. The following excerpts
are from his address on the occasion of his ordination and installation as the 9th Bishop of Ballarat.
• I ask you to teach me how to be your bishop. Every time I
have begun a new appointment, I have said to the community
that you are the people whom God has given me to love. As I
begin this new ministry among you, I say the same to the
whole diocese, people and priests of Ballarat – You are the
people whom God has given me to love. As I received this
ring during today’s Mass, I made that commitment with all
my heart...
• I willingly stretch out my arms to be led to where I didn’t
expect to go. I am willing because I know that I do not take
this journey alone. We will journey together, and we will
journey with our Christ...
• I conclude these remarks by quoting Pope Leo XIV:
‘The supreme rule in the Church is love. No one is called to
dominate; all are called to serve. No one should impose his
or her own ideas; we must all listen to one another. No one is
excluded; we are all called to participate. No one possesses
the whole truth; we must all humbly seek it and seek it
together...’
