Canberra Islamic Centre Appalled at the Cowardly Attack in Canberra City
Canberrans are appalled at the outrageous and cowardly attack on a highly regarded
and long-standing member of the Muslim and multicultural community. The attack on
Ms Diana Abdel-Rahman, OAM took place at the City bus interchange on Sunday 13 April
following the peaceful Palm Sunday Refugee rally. It would appear that Ms Abdel-
Rahman was targeted and followed by the assailant who intended to cause her serious
harm. She was struck from behind by a male assailant whilst she was returning to her
car with a friend. Ms Abdel-Rahman was walking while holding a flag pole with both the Palestinian and Lebanese flags and eating ice-cream with a friend. The attacker hit her from behind then tried to grab flags that she was carrying then immediately fled the scene.
Ms Abdel-Rahman is a current serving Executive Committee Member of the Canberra Islamic Centre (CIC) and the Deputy-Chair of the Canberra Multicultural Community Forum (CMCF).
“The CIC community is very concerned by this attack which took place in broad daylight in the centre of Canberra City. Ms Abdel-Rahman, a well-known public figure was taken off guard in what clearly was not a random attack”, said Mrs Azra Khan, President of CIC.
The normalisation of hate remains a significant issue, with ongoing perceptions that such incidents of hate and violence are being inadequately managed by authorities.
CIC calls on all sides of political leadership to stand up and strongly condemn this act.
Anything less will see more attacks to occur on law abiding citizens and further erode
social cohesion in a once peaceful and harmonious city, Mrs Khan said.
Canberra Islamic Centre is a not-for-profit community organisation established in1992.
It provides a range of social, youth and educational services to the Muslim community, including Canberra’s largest mosque, the Sabah Al Ahmad Masjid and Islamic Education Centre and the Australian National Islamic Library.
