Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta

Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta Our Diocese is made up of diverse faith communities with a true love for God and people. A few are large and complex, most are small.

The Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta is set in regional NE Victoria, plus the Albury border area in NSW. Of the total population, roughly one person in five would claim some kind of Anglican affiliation. There are now 24 parishes or districts incorporating some 79 places of worship. Most congregations are considerably older than the community around them and there are many parts of the region where

the rural population is in decline. On the other hand there is also major population growth both in the border area and potentially also where the southern parishes are becoming dormitory areas for Melbourne. The diocese is divided into two territorial archdeaconries and three rural deaneries. These deaneries are the potential basis for both centrally supported pastoral care and response networks and a substantial program of education and formation. The cathedral and registry are in Wangaratta. The largest population centre is Albury Wodonga with around 100,000 people. There are 6 retirement villages, 3 Diocesan associated schools and Anglicare supported welfare and outreach programs are in place across the Diocese in almost every parish. Theological education is a high priority, including in-service training both for clergy and lay people. Ordinands attend Trinity College Melbourne within the United Faculty of Theology. A whole range of Diocesan ministry and service is offered and supported: clergy, lay, paid and unpaid. All this and more is what constitutes this largely liberal catholic expression of Australian Anglicanism.

Well done, Fr Jim, a good and faithful servant. May you rest in peace and rise in glory.

Today, Holy Tuesday, we gathered as a Diocese to celebrate the Chrism Mass. It was also an occasion for the diocesan farewell to the Dean, The Very Rev Neil Hicks, who concludes his ministry in mid April to enjoy retirement. It was a very good and happy occasion.
