THE HUNGER BENEATH CIVILIZATION
Series: REVEALING CHRIST AS THE ULTIMATE NEED OF HUMANITY

“And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.”

NB. Some translations say "...also he has set ETERNITY in their hearts...." This is the one we will use in this sermon.

INTRODUCTION
Humanity has achieved astonishing things.
Men have crossed oceans, built mighty civilizations, split the atom, touched the skies with towers, and filled the earth with the noise of progress. Cities shine through the night. Technology advances daily. Knowledge multiplies across generations.
Yet despite all this advancement, humanity remains deeply restless.
The modern world is full of entertainment yet empty of peace.
Full of connection yet drowning in loneliness.
Full of information yet starving for wisdom.
Full of pleasure yet haunted by despair.
Something is wrong beneath civilization.
The problem of humanity is deeper than economics, politics, or education. There is an inward famine hidden beneath outward progress.
The human soul is hungry.
And until man understands the true nature of this hunger, he will continue searching for eternal fulfillment in temporary things.

I. ETERNITY IN THE HUMAN HEART
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (KJV)
“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart…”
Many translations render this: “He has set eternity in the human heart.”
This means humanity was created with an inward awareness of something beyond the visible world.
Man was not designed merely for survival.
He was designed for eternity.
That is why every civilization searches for meaning.
That is why humanity continually reaches beyond itself through worship, philosophy, art, science, religion, conquest, and exploration.
Man is haunted by eternity.
The human spirit carries a memory of something greater than earthly existence.
This is why material things never fully satisfy the soul.
Isaiah 55:2 (KJV)
“Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?”
Humanity keeps consuming, yet remains inwardly hungry.
Because the soul is searching for more than earthly things can provide.

II. THE ORIGINAL FULLNESS OF MAN
Before sin entered the world, humanity was complete in God.
In Genesis, Adam was not searching for meaning, identity, or fulfillment.
He already possessed fellowship with God.
Before there were kingdoms, systems, economies, entertainment, or civilization — there was communion with the Creator.
Man’s first environment was not culture.
It was presence.
Genesis 3:8 (KJV)
“And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…”
Humanity was created:
to know God,
to walk with God,
to draw life from God.
Just as a fish was designed for water, humanity was designed for divine fellowship.
But sin fractured that relationship.
Sin was not merely the breaking of a commandment.
It was separation from the Source of life.
And from that separation came:
fear,
shame,
emptiness,
striving,
alienation,
death.
Ever since Eden, humanity has been trying to fill a spiritual absence it barely understands.

III. CIVILIZATION AS HUMANITY’S SEARCH FOR COMPLETENESS
After the fall, man began building outwardly because he had become empty inwardly.
Civilization became humanity’s attempt to recover significance without fully returning to God.
We see this pattern immediately in Scripture.
After Cain killed Abel, the Bible says:
Genesis 4:16 (KJV)
“And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD…”
Then immediately afterward:
Genesis 4:17 (KJV)
“…and he builded a city…”
This is profoundly symbolic.
The first city recorded in Scripture was built by a man who had departed from the presence of God.
Cain lost inward peace, so he sought outward security.
Humanity has repeated this pattern throughout history.
Men build:
cities to feel secure,
towers to feel significant,
empires to feel powerful,
wealth to feel sufficient —
while remaining spiritually empty.
Even the tower of Babel reveals humanity trying to ascend without surrendering to God.
Genesis 11:4 (KJV)
“Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name…”
Notice the language: “Let us make us a name.”
Humanity longs for significance.
But man keeps trying to achieve through self-exaltation what can only come through restored relationship with God.

IV. BROKEN CISTERNS
Humanity keeps treating symptoms while ignoring the disease.
The disease is separation from God.
This is why the prophet Jeremiah declared:
Jeremiah 2:13 (KJV)
“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.”
This is the tragedy of fallen humanity.
Man rejects the Fountain, then searches desperately for water elsewhere.
People try to fill the soul with:
pleasure,
money,
relationships,
power,
ambition,
entertainment,
even religion without true communion with God.
But broken cisterns cannot satisfy eternal thirst.
This is why achievement loses its excitement so quickly.
This is why sinful desire continually increases.
This is why humanity constantly searches for “something more.”
Temporary things cannot permanently satisfy eternal hunger.
Ecclesiastes 1:8 (KJV)
“…the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.”
The soul keeps crying for what only God can provide.

V. THE RESTLESSNESS OF THE NATIONS
The unrest of humanity is not merely political.
It is spiritual.
Creation itself groans under separation from God.
Romans 8:22 (KJV)
“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
Underneath wars, confusion, corruption, anxiety, and societal collapse lies a deeper cry: humanity is searching for restoration.
This is why God spoke through Haggai:
Haggai 2:7 (KJV)
“And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come…”
The shaking reveals insufficiency.
God allows earthly systems to tremble so humanity can discover that its deepest need is not another empire, ideology, invention, or philosophy.
Humanity’s deepest need is Christ.
Not merely religion.
Not merely morality.
Not merely tradition.
But the living Christ Himself.

VI. CHRIST: THE ANSWER TO HUMAN HUNGER
Jesus Christ did not come merely to improve human life.
He came to restore humanity to its Source.
This is why Jesus declared:
John 6:35 (KJV)
“I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger…”
And again:
John 4:14 (KJV)
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst…”
Christ presents Himself as the answer to humanity’s deepest hunger and thirst.
The reason nothing else satisfies fully is because the soul was designed around Him.
Acts 17:28 (KJV)
“For in him we live, and move, and have our being…”
Without God, humanity searches endlessly because it has become disconnected from the very Source of life.
The cross was Heaven’s answer to humanity’s exile.
Christ came:
to reconcile man to God,
to restore fellowship,
to heal separation,
to bring humanity home again.

CONCLUSION
Beneath all civilization lies a cry.
Behind humanity’s noise is longing.
Behind achievement is emptiness.
Behind pleasure is thirst.
Behind endless striving is a soul searching for home.
This is why man remains restless despite progress.
Because eternity still echoes within the human heart.
As Augustine of Hippo once said:
“Thou hast made us for thyself, and our heart is restless, until it rests in thee.”
The human heart will remain restless until it returns to the One for whom it was created.
And only Jesus Christ can satisfy the hunger beneath civilization.

ALTAR / REVIVAL CALL
Tonight, many have searched everywhere except the presence of God.
Some searched through:
success,
pleasure,
ambition,
relationships,
religion,
achievement.
Yet the emptiness remains.
Because what the soul truly seeks is not a thing.
It is the living God.
Christ is still calling weary humanity back to Himself.
Not merely into religion.
Not merely into tradition.
But into restored fellowship with God.
The invitation of Heaven still stands:
Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
The hunger beneath civilization can only be satisfied by the living Christ.
