"The light of the Gospel"

‘This ministry’, v1, of ‘beholding the glory of God’, 3:18, is what has been given to Paul ‘from the LORD’. In contrast to his opponents who have ‘their ministry’ based on a covenant that is now de-glorified by the infinitely greater glory of the new covenant. This is the source and content of Paul’s life and ministry. The excellence of ‘this ministry’ is the basis of Paul’s lifestyle as an apostle, despite what his opponents say. Paul now counters at least five accusations about his character and ministry, and in so doing contrasts the ministries of these new teachers with his own. ‘we do not lose heart’, (v1); ‘we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways’, (v2a); ‘we refuse to practice cunning, use deception’, (v2b); ‘nor do we tamper with, distort, God’s Word’, (v2c); ‘even if our gospel is veiled’, (v3).
How did Paul exercise ‘this ministry’? Principally by preaching and teaching. Preaching, as in proclaiming the Word of God, remains the chief ministry of the church. But it is the content of what he preached that is all important. Paul says. ‘what we preach, unlike others, is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants, slaves.’ v5.

"The Christian hope"

The Christian hope, 3:12-18
What is the Christian’s ‘hope’? V12. It is the hope of ‘glory’, v18. The ministry of the new covenant is to impart glory to those who receive it. What is this glory, it is to be fully as we were created to be, to be truly human, to be ‘in His likeness’, v18. This is the hope of all God’s people, that only the spirit of the Lord can fulfil. As Moses turned to the Lord under the old covenant, now the Lord of the old covenant has more completely revealed Himself as Christ. The Lord to whom we now turn is the Lord Jesus Christ. The 'super apostles' have apparently focused on Jesus ‘in the flesh’, that is, in terms of Jesus’ law keeping, thus seeing Him as promoting the old covenant as the way to God.
We now have no shame but with full confidence in the new covenant, ‘we, with unveiled faces, all behold the Lord’s glory, are being changed into His likeness…’, v18. This is the work and power of the gospel of Christ which Paul preached. For all who ‘turn to the Lord’ the ‘veil’ of shame and blindness ‘is removed’, v16. Here is freedom, v17, whereas to go back to the old covenant is to still be in a state of slavery. This is the unchanging activity of the Christian life from beginning to end. The gospel of Christ, of which Paul is an apostle, brings a transformation, little by little, ‘one degree of glory to another’, v18, as we through the Word of God live and ‘behold the Lord’s glory’.
This is the triumph in which God leads His church, it is the triumph of the grace and power of God, reproducing through the Spirit the glory and splendour of Christ in lives which are outwardly weak and decaying and ‘passing away’, 1Cor 7:31. Only the grace of God is kind enough and the power of God strong enough to achieve such a transformation in sinful human lives.

Feeding Sheep, or Amusing Goats?

An evil is in the 'professed' camp of the Lord, so gross in its impudence, that the most short-sighted Christian can hardly fail to notice it. During the past few years this evil has developed at an alarming rate. It has worked like leaven, until the whole lump ferments!
The devil has seldom done a more clever thing, than hinting to the Church that part of their mission is to provide entertainment for the people, with a view to winning them. From speaking out the gospel, the Church has gradually toned down her testimony--then winked at and excused the frivolities of the day. Then she tolerated them in her borders. Now she has adopted them under the plea of reaching the masses!
My first contention is that providing amusement for the people is nowhere spoken of in the Scriptures as a function of the Church. If it is a Christian work, then why did not Christ speak of it? "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature--and provide amusement for those who do not relish the gospel."
No such words, however, are to be found. It did not seem to occur to Him. Where do entertainers come in? The Holy Spirit is silent concerning them. Were the prophets persecuted because they amused the people--or because they confronted them? The 'concert' has no martyr roll.
Again, providing amusement is in direct opposition to the teaching and life of Christ and all His apostles. What was the attitude of the apostolic Church to the world? "You are the salt of the world"--not the sugar candy. You are something the world will spit out--not swallow.
Had Jesus introduced more of the bright and pleasant elements into His teaching, He would have been more popular. When "many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him," I do not hear Him say: "Run after these people, Peter, and tell them we will have a different style of service tomorrow; something short and attractive, with little preaching. We will have a pleasant evening for the people. Tell them they will be sure to enjoy it! Be quick, Peter, we must get the people somehow!"
No! Jesus pitied sinners, sighed and wept over them--but never sought to amuse them!
In vain will the epistles be searched to find any trace of the 'gospel of amusement.' Their message is, "Therefore, come out from them and separate yourselves from them . . . Don't touch their filthy things..." Anything approaching amusement is conspicuous by its absence. They had boundless confidence in the gospel, and employed no other weapon.
After Peter and John were locked up for preaching, the Church had a prayer meeting, but they did not pray: "Lord, grant unto your servants that by a wise and discriminating use of innocent recreation we may show these people how happy we are!"
No! They did not cease from preaching Christ! They had no time for arranging entertainments. Scattered by persecution, they went everywhere preaching the gospel. They turned the world upside down--that is the only difference from today's church.
Lastly, amusement fails to effect the end desired. Let the heavy-laden who found peace through the concert, not keep silent! Let the drunkard to whom the dramatic entertainment had been God's link in the chain of their conversion, stand up! There are none to answer! The mission of amusement produces no converts!
The need of the hour for today's ministry is earnest spirituality joined with Biblical doctrine, so understood and felt, that it sets men on fire.
Lord, clear the Church of all the rot and rubbish the devil has imposed on her, and bring us back to apostolic methods!

"The Glory of Moses and the Glory of Christ"

The Glory of Moses and the Glory of Christ (3:7-18) - Paul’s opponents want to take the church back to Moses. So Paul elaborates on not just the foolishness, but the danger of any such thinking. We see the superior splendour of the New Covenant, (v7-11). There’s no question the glory of the old covenant was splendid, but as wonderful as it was, there’s a greater splendour that has come with the Spirit. Compared to Christ, Moses has no glory. Indeed Moses’ glory was a fading glory, v13. It could never be permanent, for it was never meant to be permanent. By contrast the glory of the new covenant is unlimited and permanent, v11. Now that the new has come, ‘what once was glorious has no glory now in comparison’, v10. We should be vigilant to any teaching or conduct that blurs the distinctive and superior character of the new covenant. For example, Christians cannot celebrate the old covenant ‘Passover’; or participate in holy communion as an old covenant ‘sacrificial offering’; or see the exodus story as a blueprint for liberation theology. Much less to see human law obedience as a means of attaining righteousness, cf Gal 6:12-16.

Christ, who is our life

Colossians 3:4, "When Christ, who is our life, appears--then you also will appear with Him in glory!"
Paul's marvelously rich expression indicates that Christ is the source of our spiritual life. "And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins!" Ephesians 2:1. That same voice which brought Lazarus out of the tomb, raised us to newness of life.
Christ is now the substance of our spiritual life. It is by His life that we live. He is in us as, the hope of glory, the spring of our actions, the central thought which moves every other thought.
Christ is the sustenance of our life. What can the Christian feed upon but Jesus? O wayworn pilgrims in this wilderness of sin--you never get a morsel to satisfy the hunger of your hearts, unless you find it in Him!
Christ is the solace of our life. All our true joys come from Him. In times of trouble, His presence is our consolation. There is nothing worth living for, but Him. His loving-kindness is better than life!
Christ is the object of our life. As the ship speeds towards the port--so the believer hastens towards the haven of his Savior's bosom. As the arrow flies to its goal--so the Christian flies towards fellowship with Jesus.
Christ is the exemplar of our life. If we live in near fellowship with the Lord Jesus, then we shall grow like Him. We shall set Him before us as our Divine example, and we shall seek to tread in His footsteps. "Whoever claims to live in Him, must walk as Jesus did." 1 John 2:6
Oh! how safe, how honored, how happy is the Christian--since Christ is our life!
"For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain!" Philippians 1:21
