“Vesak", the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away. Come along to Vesak Day this Sunday 31st May at Dhammaduta, 26B Jaboh Close, Upper Orara. Events start at 9am. See flyer attached. Bookings through our page. Everyone welcome!

Thank you Dr Louis for the Dhamma teachings today on the topic of equanimity. Dr Louis taught today,

“Equanimity is freedom. Peace doesn’t come from controlling life, but learning to be with life as it is. A heart that doesn’t cling or resist. A heart that remains steady. This is freedom.”

And also he said,

“We have the courage to meet life as it is with compassion, wisdom and a steady heart.”

Yet at the same time, Dr Louis encouraged us to hold our imperfect humanity with compassion. Continue to become more aware, awake, kind, and balanced, while holding ourselves and others gently, acknowledging both the limitations and potential of our humanity.

Today we learned from Dr Louis about the power of sympathetic joy - rejoicing in the happiness of others. Dr Louis taught, the mind that thinks, “I am truly happy for you,” is a mind that has let go of comparison and can be light and free. He taught, comparison destroys happiness. It creates envy. The near enemy is attachment. The far enemy is envy. It’s a poison. It’s in part based on the false belief that there’s a limited amount of happiness. Envy makes us feel small and we can’t rejoice. When comparison drops, the heart is free. When envy fades, joy naturally appears. Thus we free ourselves. A light heart free from envy is free.

We can think instead, “May your happiness continue. I rejoice in your happiness. May your success benefit many.”

Another’s light brings light for everyone, brings light into the community.

You no longer have to wait for your turn to be happy, when you are happy when others do well.

When others do well we also benefit. The world is big enough for everyone to grow.

Repeat this in the mind and it will become a true feeling.

Next fortnight Dr Louis will teach on the topic of staying calm and balanced - the practice of equanimity - 17th May 2026 9am to 11am. See Dhammaduta Coffs Harbour, page for details.
