We join our family of churches in Victoria in acknowledging and praying for Helen Haines, in condemning all acts of violence and intimidation, and in seeking wisdom, compassion and peace across our Australian community.

The Baptist Union of Victoria is deeply saddened by the reported attack on Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines, and extends our thoughts and prayers to Helen, her family and all those affected.

Our Baptist movement has valued opportunities to engage with Helen through advocacy conversations and meetings in Parliament, and we are grateful for the time she has given us and for her willingness to listen and engage with the concerns of our churches and communities. The photo of Helen is from a meeting with a Baptist Delegation in Canberra, October 2025.

We condemn all acts of violence and intimidation, and believe these have no place in our communities or in the respectful engagement that should underpin public life.

We pray for Helen’s recovery and for wisdom, compassion and peace in our community during this difficult time.

It’s not something we often talk about, but the reality is that pastors only sit in their roles for a season. Sometimes a short season, sometimes long. But we know that at some point, that season will end.

We are grateful to Rev Dr Scott Morrison who led our thinking on how pastors can prepare to finish well, and shared how he passed the baton at his church after 25years
