Cathedral Parish Townsville Church Address: 270 Stanley Street, Townsville QLD 4810 The Cathedral was closed on 1 August, 2004 and reopened 23 June, 2006.

In January 1892, the Church of St Joseph on the Strand collapsed into a small creek, which had become a raging torrent after a downpour, described as "practically a waterspout", struck Townsville. It was after this, and a series of other calamities, that the decision was made to build the main church in Townsville on the foundation of rock on Castle Hill. The foundation stone for the new Church of

the Sacred Heart was laid on 7 October 1900 and the church was completed and opened on 16 November 1902. It remained the parish church until it was consecrated as a Cathedral in 1930, when the Diocese of Townsville was divided from the Diocese of Rockhampton. To mark the 75th Jubilee of the Diocese, Bishop Michael Putney commenced the $3 million project to refurbish the Sacred Heart Cathedral. MASS SCHEDULES:

IMPORTANT | Restoration of St Joseph's Church

Works at St Joseph’s Church will begin this week, requiring a temporary relocation of all Masses. Please be guided with the temporary relocation of Masses AT THEIR USUAL TIMES.

During this period, weekend Masses will be held at St Patrick School's Hall, while weekday Masses will take place at the Cathedral. Masses will return to St Joseph’s Church once works are complete.

On Saturday (15 August), St Mary’s Church was almost filled to capacity as parishioners, family, and friends gathered to worship the Lord and offer Him praise on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Holy Mass was presided over by Father Sylvester Emetuche, with Father Will Brennan concelebrating. Together, they led the congregation through a reverent liturgy, highlighting Our Lady’s profound faith and unique role in salvation history. The strong turnout reflected a deep sense of community and devotion on this major feast day! 💙

Young Adults Vespers & Movie Night 🙏🍿

On Friday, 14th August, we held our first parish Young Adults Vespers & Movie Night at St. Mary's Church, West End!

It was a special night, as our first Vespers fell on the vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption.
Fr Will led us in prayer as we commemorated the Blessed Virgin Mary, before the group gathered to enjoy a movie together.

We will announce our next gathering in the upcoming weeks, and we encourage all young adults to join us!

Thank you to everyone who came along.
We also invite you to join us for Mass at St Mary’s Church tomorrow at 8:30 AM for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
