Feast of Pentecost
The “feasts” of Yahweh in Hebrews are called “moed” - which means “appointed meeting times”
When God created the world, on the 4th day He set the sun, moon and stars in the heavens for “signs and seasons” - the word “seasons” is the Hebrew word “moed”, the same word used for the “feasts”.
God has designated meeting times with His people. It is all part of the journey to Como my to maturity and walking in the inheritance that Jesus has accomplished for us through the work of the Cross and His resurrection.
Pentecost, or as it is called in Hebrew, “Shavuot”, the Feast of Weeks, was seven weeks and one day (50 days) after the Day of Firstfruits, the final aspect of Passover. Jesus rose from the dead on the Day of Firstfruits, becoming the “Firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” - 1 Corinthians 15:20, 23.
50 days later, after He had finally ascended to the right hand of God, He poured out the Holy Spirit on the 120 disciples in an upper room of a dwelling in Jerusalem.
The first Pentecost happened at My Sinai in the third month, about 50 days after the first Passover in Egypt. At Sinai, Moses received the law written on Tablets of Stone and the children of Israel entered into a Covenant with God to be His people - Exodus 19, 20 & 24.
There were awesome manifestations of God’s power: smoke, fire, lightnings, thunderings, the sound of a trumpet and a dark cloud - Exodus 19:1-20
There was also great mixture, Moses and Joshua came down the mountain to discover the children of Israel had made a golden calf, were worshiping it and having a feast around it, even calling it “Yahweh” - Exodus 32
On that first Pentecost there were 3000 souls who died due to that idolatrous worship - Exodus 32:28
In Leviticus 23:15-18 it says that this feast of Weeks was to be celebrated “with leaven”. Showing that there is still mixture in this feast and there is a test that happens in the feast. It was celebrated in the Wilderness, a place of testing.
The fulfilment of Pentecost happened “when the day of Pentecost fully came” - Acts 2:1
Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit.
There were awesome and powerful manifestations - sound as of a mighty rushing wind from heaven, tongues as of fire on the heads of the disciples, tongues (languages) supernaturally spoken by the power of the Holy Spirit - Acts 2:2-4.
The New Covenant was now fully established as the Holy Spirit was given to all the believers and now the “law was put in their minds and written on their hearts” rather than on tablets of stone. There is now a New Covenant people, filled with the Spirit of God, the law being internal and part of the new creation!
And on the day when Pentecost was fulfilled about “3000 souls” received the word gladly and were baptised - Acts 2:41! The law on stone under the Old Covenant brought death. The law on hearts by the Holy Spirit in the New Covenant brings life and salvation!
Let us celebrate the Feast by receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, being filled and immersed in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and prophesying, being empowered for the journey and overcoming the tests of the wilderness by learning to be led by the Holy Spirit.
Let us meet God at Pentecost!
