St John's Toorak

St John's Toorak An historic church in inner-city Melbourne, Australia. Church & Garden Open 7 days a week. St. Services at 8am and 10am on Sundays.

John’s Anglican church has been a prominent presence in the Toorak area since the church was completed and opened for worship in 1862. We are a community who gather regularly to worship and pray, to study the Bible, to enjoy fellowship and to discuss matters of faith. As we seek to follow Jesus, we welcome anyone who desires to do the same, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation or background.

On Wednesday 26 August, a sudden and powerful flash flood tore through Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. A surge of water, ice, rocks and debris swept through towns and remote mountain areas, destroying homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure. Early reports indicate that at least 389 lives have been lost and more than 677 people are missing. Search and rescue operations remain underway. Anglican Overseas Aid’s partner, International Nepal Fellowship, is delivering emergency shelter, food relief, safe drinking water, and early recovery to those who need it most. 🎨 Lucian Tapiedi (Modern Martyrs of the 20th century), Tim Crawley (b.1955), Westminster Abbey, London, United Kingdom
At Sangara mission station in Papua New Guinea, there stands a row of graves: two of Australian women, Mavis Parkinson and May Hayman, and a third of Papuan man, Lucian Tapiedi. Tapiedi’s father was a sorcerer, who died when his son was still young. Taught in Christian mission schools, Tapiedi became a teacher and evangelist at Sangara Mission station where he was known as a diligent and cheerful presence and for his enjoyment of both sport and music. In July 1942 the Japanese invaded the island. A group of missionaries struggled to evade capture. Among them was Lucian Tapiedi, who was determined not to abandon the missionaries with whom he worked. “I will stay with the Fathers and Sisters.”
Lucian Tapiedi is one of the ten Modern Martyrs of the 20th century commemorated at Westminster Abbey. The Martyr statues were unveiled in 1998 above the west entrance door of the Abbey. The statue was carved by Tim Crawley from drawings provided by missionary Revd John Ewington.
