What an awesome Sunday 7 June was! We had our regular monthly Mass at 5 pm. Followed by community dinner in honour of our Fr Ivica’s birthday. 39 people participated including our special guests, Fr Greg Barker representing the Newcastle-Maitland dioceses and our long time church friend Dorothea.

Lots of photos were taken and I share them here, including images of short speeches in English and Croatian. Unfortunately some people had to leave before we took the photos.

The beautiful birthday Cake was made by Kirilli Hall (she was assisted by her brother Zacc and mum Ana). Zoran Debeljak did čevapi on the BBQ and our wonderful ladies as per usual prepared food (Roza, Bozica, Dragica, Ana, Jela, Angela and others assisted on the night). None of this would be possible without this wonderful community.

We gifted Fra Ivica with a birthday card and money, insisting he spend it on him self, not the church (which is what he normally does). Big smile on his face was because there was an increase in parishioners attending this day. Thank you to everyone who attended, you made this day memorable for him and us! God bless you all and see you at church next month! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Kad bismo mogli dobiti 40+ osoba koje prisustvuju svaki mjesec, mogli bismo imati dvije mise u mjesecu.

Večera je dobrovoljni prilog.

Radi priprema, molimo vas da obavijestite Rozi Majdandžić ili meni (Marici Batković) do 4 Lipnja tko će sve doći.

Što nas je više to bolje.
Svi ste dobro došli! 🙏🙏🙏

REMINDER - Holy Mass in our small chapel is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month at 5:00 PM.

The next Mass is on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

After Holy Mass, YOU’RE INVITED to join us for dinner in honour of Fra Ivica Pečnik's birthday.

Birthday card will be available for anyone who wishes to contribute money as a gift.

Knowing Fra Ivica, for him the best gift would be to see as many of us attend mass as possible.

If you haven’t attended before or since COVID 19 please consider attending. If we could get 40+ to attend every month we could see mass increased to two per month.

Dinner is voluntary contribution.

For the sake of preparations, please let Roza Majdandzic or myself (Ma**ca Batkovic) know who is coming by 4 June.

Everyone is welcome! The more the marrier. 🙏🙏🙏

__________

Holy Mass in our chapel, Tighes Hill is this Sunday, 3.5.2026, at 5pm. The Rosary is prayed half an hour before Mass.

When a priest shows such sacrifice by coming from afar so that we can have Mass in our mother tongue, the least we can do is return the favor with love and time by participating in Holy Mass together.

The arrival of a priest is a gift, and our response is a sign of gratitude to God and the shepherd who works for us and our religious needs.

Sunday is a time when, after a busy week, we rest and pray for our souls and those closest to us.

Let us really try to take that little time, worship the Lord and support each other in the faith. See you on Sunday. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Hvala Vam. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Yesterday (April 12, 2016), we from Newcastle made a pilgrimage to the Croatian Catholic Center Blacktown and together we celebrated the White/Young Easter.

White Sunday (or Young Easter) is the first Sunday after Easter, also known as Thomas Sunday. It marks the end of the Easter Octave, and the name comes from the tradition of early Christians who took off the white robes received at baptism on that day. It is often celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday.

Everything started with the Holy Mass at 11:00 a.m., then there was a picnic with traditional food, drinks and cakes. We were entertained by the entertainment group "Akcija".

We had a great time and felt a nice welcome from our dear Fr. Ivica and the community of the Croatian Catholic Center Blacktown. Thank you. 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Tradicija bojanja i tucanja uskršnjih jaja

Simbolika boja: Crvena simbolizira Kristovu muku i ljubav, zelena plodnost i nadu, bijela čistoću, a žuta svjetlost.

Tucanje Jajima (Običaj i Simbolika)

The Tradition of Dyeing and Beating Easter Eggs

In Croatia, this tradition is deeply rooted in the Christian symbolism of new life, fertility, and the resurrection of Christ.

Traditionally, eggs are decorated on Good Friday or Holy Saturday, and the custom varies depending on the region.

Symbolism of the colors: Red symbolizes Christ's passion and love, green fertility and hope, white purity, and yellow light.

Guardian of home
The first dyed egg, usually red, is called čuvarkuća or strašnik. It is kept until the next Easter as a symbol of family protection, health, and prosperity.

Egg Beating (Custom and Symbolism)
Egg Beating is a popular game and custom at Easter, especially popular among children.
How to Play: Participants choose an Easter egg and hit it, usually top to top (or bottom to bottom), until someone's egg breaks.
Winner: The winner is the one whose egg remains whole, and the beating symbolizes the victory of life over death, or the joy of Easter.
Tradition: This is a competitive but joyful part of the Easter breakfast when the family gathers.

Related Customs
Blessing of the Meal: Eggs are taken to church for blessing on Holy Saturday or Easter morning.
Gift-giving: Eggs are given as gifts to loved ones, friends, and neighbors, symbolizing friendship and love.
Eggs in Podravina and Međimurje: Regions known for their richly decorated Easter eggs with floral and Christian motifs.

Today, dyeing eggs for Easter is a fun activity that brings families together, especially children, and most often takes place on Holy Saturday. Although different ways of decorating and dyeing eggs have developed over time, the tradition of the red egg still remains the most important, reminding us of the deep symbolic meaning of this custom.

ŠTO UČINITI SA SVOJIM BLAGOSLOVLJENIM PALMOM /
WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR BLESSED PALM

No, postoji nešto još dublje.

U tome Crkva, s dubokom mudrošću, ujedinjuje dva trenutka: "Hosana!"

——————-

The Mass has ended, and many still do not know what to do with their palm.

Some leave it in the car; others throw it away after a few days. Without realizing it, they treat as something ordinary what has already been blessed.

That palm is no longer just a branch. It is a sacramental, a sign blessed by the Church to help us live closer to God.

So, what should we do?

The most common tradition is to keep it at home in a worthy place: near a crucifix, a sacred image, or a prayer corner. It is not meant to be a decoration, but a visible reminder that Christ is King in your life. It may also be placed at the door or on a wall as a sign of faith within the home.

Yet there is something even deeper. These palms are not simply discarded over time. They are kept with reverence or burned respectfully. Why? Because from these very palms come the ashes used on the following Ash Wednesday.

In this, the Church, with profound wisdom, unites two moments: the “Hosanna!” of Palm Sunday and the “Remember you are dust” at the beginning of Lent. It reminds us that the Christian life is not a passing emotion, but a constant path of conversion.

If this year you carried your palm with faith, do not forget it afterward. Let that sign remain in your home and in your heart.

Christ does not wish to enter your life for just one day, He desires to remain and reign every day of your life.

PALM SUNDAY - Sunday 29th March, 2026

Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem, during which palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

There will be only one Holy Mass commencing at 10:00am. Remember to bring your olive/palm branches for blessing.

We also invite our dear Parishioners to remain after Holy Mass in community by enjoying each other's company with some light refreshments at "Stara Hiẓ̌a".
