Reflection

He is closer than you think!

"Blessed are…." (Matthew 5:3)

There are a few scenes in the Gospels that I really would have loved to have seen firsthand, and this is one of them. Sometimes Jesus says things that seem so contradictory to our lived experience and I can imagine the people hearing these words and looking around at each other were wondering what He was on about! Nothing in this world says that blessing belongs to the poor, those who mourn, the meek, the persecuted…

So what’s going on here? I love how Jesus just shakes everything up and causes us to open our eyes to new possibilities. It’s easy to write off difficult seasons as something to be endured – just grit your teeth and get through it! But what I hear today is that there might be blessing in the darkness, trials, and grief.

Now, in no way am I saying God sends us hard things to cause us to suffer. His ways are far above my ways so I don’t even try to make sense of the age old question of why there is suffering. But I know this – God is good, even in the midst of suffering.

In this scripture I hear a promise for when I am suffering – the promise of His presence. He is with us in these dark times and that is the blessing. We are not alone as we walk through the valleys. He walks beside us. He comforts us. He fills us and pours His mercy out upon us.

So, are you struggling today? Reach out to Jesus. I promise He is with you and will never leave you to face this alone.

When have you experienced Jesus’ presence and blessing during hard times?

St Boniface

2 Timothy 3:10-17. O Lord, great peace have they who love your law – Ps 118(119):157, 160-161, 165-166, 168. Mark 12:35-37.

Signs of deep trust

St Paul clearly had a special relationship with Timothy, to whom he wrote the letter from which today’s reading is taken. The friends you make through faith are unique, especially if you have weathered a few storms together. Paul and Timothy travelled far and wide together; both went to jail. Timothy is even mentioned as the co-author of the letters to the Philippians, the Colossians and the Thessalonians. That is surely a sign of deep trust.

It seems that Timothy was anxious. Writing to the Corinthians, Paul asked the community to ‘put him at ease’. Yet Timothy became the leader of the Christians at Ephesus, proving that even quiet people can lead. All this helps us understand the tone of intimacy in today’s reading. Paul can let his guard down with Timothy: ‘You are well aware that anybody who tries to live in devotion to Christ is certain to be attacked.’ This was certainly true of Paul. It may be true of us. We will value friends if it is.

Welcome parishioner,

Message from Archbishop Shane,
This week, we hosted a Prayer Vigil for Domestic and Family Violence at the Cathedral of St Stephen. Many of those who attended had been involved with domestic or family violence in their family. Others came to express their solidarity with victims and to ensure that domestic violence is named in public rather than remaining hidden behind closed doors. We were joined by politicians, members of advocacy groups and community representatives. At the beginning of the vigil, we were reminded of the shocking statistic that more than two million Australians have experienced violence from a partner or ex-partner, which is almost one person in ten! Too many people in our community are anxious and afraid in their own homes; they have a desperate need for safety, respect and peace. We committed ourselves to speak and act in ways that foster respect and right relationship in our homes and communities and that empower people to ask for help when they are in need. We prayed for those who have suffered and for those who are suffering now, we prayed for healing and we prayed for a change of heart for those who have caused harm.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION

MORE than 6000 Brisbane Catholics are preparing to publicly share their faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ at the Walk with Jesus Procession from St Stephen’s Cathedral this Sunday.
Brisbane Archbishop Shane Mackinlay will preside over the celebration, joined by clergy, religious, parish staff and lay faithful as they walk around the streets of the CBD.
Archdiocesan Ministries Pastoral Care project officer Liliana Ortiz said the procession was one of the biggest events on the Church’s calendar in Brisbane.
She said it would bring together people from diverse walks of life.

“It reflects the unity of the Church across cultures, generations, and parishes, and shows how strong faith is in the Archdiocese of Brisbane,” she said.
This year’s procession will feature several cultural elements, including canopy bearers dressed in traditional attire and the Melkite Scout Band accompanying the procession through the streets.
The Migrant Jubilee Cross will also be carried as a sign of gratitude for the contributions that migrant communities bring to the life of the local Church.
Organisers encouraged participants to arrive early, wear comfortable clothing and make parking arrangements in advance, as no parking is available at the Cathedral.
Those travelling by public transport should also be aware that a marathon on the day may impact availability.
A vigil will be held at St Stephen’s Chapel from 7pm on the night before until 8am on Sunday.

Whether we are involved in activities for this final day of National Reconciliation Week or simply waking up to another day and wondering how it will unfold, the characteristics of a compassionate life are calling to us. No matter where we are and what we are doing, may giving and receiving be at its heart. And may there be birds!

St Justin

2 Peter 1:2-7. In you, my God, I place my trust – Ps 90(91):1-2, 14-16. Mark 12:1-12.

In you, my God, I place my trust

For St Ignatius of Loyola, Scripture is both a toolbox and a treasure chest. Every story is an opportunity to imagine yourself within the world of the characters and to develop your own personal relationship with God.

Every line of Scripture, too, can be a vehicle for prayer and connection. Today’s Psalm response offers a wonderful example. Take five minutes in a quiet place and let those words slowly repeat in your mind: ‘In you, my God, I place my trust. In you, my God, I place my trust.’ If you can, let the words be a moment of respite for you. You don’t have to do anything, feel anything, say anything. You can just sit here, letting that response drift through your mind, and rest.

Welcome Parishioners,

Message from Archbishop Shane,

This week, Pope Leo published his first encyclical , dedicated to the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence. While celebrating the many benefits of technical progress, he asks us to be actively involved in reflecting on it and making decisions about it. Our priority should always be protecting the dignity of the human person, recognising how promises of profit and power can dominate decision-making and the great risk that these developments can pose to individuals and communities. The rapid expansion of digitisation, artificial intelligence and robotics are having a profound impact on our social structures, decision-making processes and our collective self-understanding. And so, "the magnificent humanity created by God stands today before a decisive choice: to erect a new Tower of Babel or to build the holy city, where God and humanity dwell together". This symbolic alternative sets up a contrast between a purely human construction founded on power and self-sufficiency and a path of shared responsibility and communion with God and one another. The choice is not about accepting or rejecting technology, but about choosing between a use that undermines the human person and one that safeguards our dignity and enhances our lives. Pope Leo asks us what kind of builders we wish to be. He calls us to choose to be "builders of communion, not architects of Babel", so that the world may recognise, in the human heart, the place where God wishes to dwell.

Don't forget next Sunday is Welcoming Sunday.

Blessings from Father Anthony, Silvana, Ann and Majella.
