It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce that the decision has been made for the Tamworth Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades to go into recess.
Due to dwindling numbers of leaders and members it has made it impossible to continue to operate effectively.
The 189th NSW West Tamworth Boys Brigade has operated continuously from humble beginnings in 1968. It was officially registered on the 18th September 1970 with 20 Boys' and 4 Officers and has faithfully and unashamedly worked in the Tamworth community even since with the object of The advancement of Christ’s Kingdom amongst Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.
Across the years the company has had two host churches, four captains, numerous chaplains and leaders and has worked with thousands of Boys’ and their families. Most notable was the dedication and commitment of more than 50 years service of George Brook as captain until his passing in 2023, and his wife Noelle, who together lovingly guided the company through many times both good and bad.
The Girls’ Brigade also had a beginning many years ago, but after going into recess made a return when a need was seen for a girls group in 2010 under the guidance of Rebecca Bailey. In the early years the company had several captains and leaders but for the last years has had a small but dedicated group of ladies who have guided the Girls with the object of To help girls to become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ and through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility to find true enrichment of life.
While it is sad to see the end of something that has been such a big part of many people lives for many years, it is also with gracious thanks to God for the opportunity to be part of the lives of so many young people and their families and to be able to serve Him in this unique way. We would like to offer our thanks to all the leaders, members and families that have supported the Brigades over the years and hope that you can look back fondly on the many many good times that were able to be had.
The company website of bbgb189.org.au and this page will continue to function for now in the hope that past members and leaders may reminisce and share stories and photos from across the years. There is a brief history of the companies available on the website.
Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades are still both very relevant and functioning groups within NSW, Australia and the world and continue to lead young people to the Lord every day. Please consider, if you able, to continue to support them in their ongoing work. Both groups can be found online.
There may be a time that the Tamworth Brigades can once again recommence but for now it is farewell and thank you!

It is with sadness that our friend, long standing elder and Boys’ Brigade Captain, and brother in Christ, George Brook, was called home to the Lord after his sudden passing at his home last weekend following a massive heart attack. While we are all dealing with this shock we also rejoice that he is now with the Lord and has completed his earthly work. As his funeral arrangements are put in place they will be shared here on the Tamworth Community Presbyterian Church page. Our prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
