We welcomed the new year and were met with surprise when we entered our church today. Where was my chair? The furniture has been rearranged. Didn’t Jesus once turn over the tables in the temple? Had something like that happened here today?
Church came to us in new and welcoming ways today. We were invited to sit at tables and were served charcuterie boards and sweet treats, tea and coffee. Hospitality at its finest!
Through song and praise, prayer and discussion, we gathered around those tables sharing a meal and celebrating communion together, the bread and wine passed among friends.
Today we learned about the light of Christ that shines in our lives and how we are called to be light in a hurting world.
At my table I had the privilege of sitting with Peter, a young man whose abilities shine in unexpected ways. Peter’s role in our church is to offer the final blessing and sending forth, something we, as a congregation, treasure.
Peter’s gifts of welcome, friendship, care and his gentle presence is a light in my life.
Today I was blessed beyond measure to share with Peter as he read the following prayer with expression, drama and passion. I wish it could be read by the reader with that same passion and with a visual of hands that moved conveying the depth of its meaning to Peter:
“Dear God, even though we have made a mess of things personally and collectively, you remain faithful. We rejoice that your Son came not to a perfect world, but to a broken world, our world. To bring light to the darkness, our darkness.
We pray for our dark and dreary world, a world in need - in need not just of a technical fix, but in need of love and grace, forgiveness and new life, hope, peace and fellowship. In need of renewal, in need of YOU. Amen”.
