On August 27, we celebrate the memorial of Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine, and a model and patroness of Christian mothers.

Monica was born into a Christian family in Tagaste, in Roman North Africa, in the fourth century. From an early age, she was deeply devoted to her Christian faith and to a life of prayer and service.

Monica was married to a pagan named Patricius, and they had three children. Monica devoted herself to raising her children and especially prayed for Augustine, whose spiritual journey caused her great sorrow. Augustine was raised in the Christian faith, but as a young man, he gradually moved away from the practice of the Catholic faith and became involved with different philosophical ideas.

Monica never gave up on her son. She followed him with her prayers and joined him during his journeys. For many years, Monica prayed and shed tears for her son's conversion. A bishop once comforted her with the words that the "son of so many tears" could not perish. Her perseverance was eventually rewarded when Augustine returned to the Christian faith. In Milan, he was baptised by Saint Ambrose in 387.

Saint Monica died later that same year, yet she had the joy of seeing her son's conversion before her death.

Saint Monica is a beautiful example of a mother's patience, love, devotion, and unwavering faith.
