Today we commemorate the sister of Patriarch Mar Shem’on, Mart Tarbo! It’s said that upon the death of the Patriarch, King Shapur’s wife fell ill. Mart Tarbo was accused of withcraft, thinking she was avenging her brother.

Upon meeting the judges following the arrest, seeing how beautiful she was, promised freedom if she were to marry. She refused. She was offered freedom if she rejected Christ and worshipped the Sun. Again, she stood firm. And the judges condemned her to death.

Her martyrdom was terrifying, having been sown in half and cut into pieces for the sake of Christ the Truth.

O Glorious Martyr, pray for us with your brother, so we may have the spirit of martyrdom and the love of Christ!

According to the Ḥudhra, our Chaldean liturgical tradition preserves together the memory of four early shepherds of the Church of the East: Mar Papa, Mar Shemʿon Bar Ṣabbaʿe, Mar Shahdust, and Mar Barbaʿshmeen.

Their ministry fell during one of the most turbulent periods for the Christians of Persia. Under the reign of King Shapur II, the Church endured severe persecution, with its clergy and faithful suffering for their refusal to abandon Christ. After Mar Papa, three successive shepherds of the Church, Mar Shemʿon, Mar Shahdust and Mar Barbaʿshmeen, would seal their ministry with the crown of martyrdom.

May these courageous men pray for our Church and her Bishops!

Today we commemorate the great Rabban Hormizd, founder of the renowned monastery in Alqosh that bears his name.

Born around the beginning of the 7th century in Beth Lapaṭ to a noble family, Hormizd chose the monastic life at the age of 18. During his journey, he encountered three monks who encouraged him to join the Monastery of Rabban Bar ʿEdta, where he embraced a life of prayer, discipline, and great mortification.

In his sixties, Rabban Hormizd travelled to Alqosh and settled there, where the local faithful helped establish what would become the Monastery of Rabban Hormizd. Throughout his life, he was known for his deep spiritual devotion, ascetic way of life, and steadfast defence of the orthodox faith.

Let us ask for the intercession of Rabban Hormizd, that through his prayers we too may strive to live lives of holiness, purity, and unwavering faith.

Today we commemorate the feast of Mar Qardagh the Martyr ♱

Born into a noble pagan family during the Persian Empire, Qardagh rose to become a governor under King Shapur. His life changed when he encountered the Christian hermit Abdisho’, whose faith and witness led Qardagh to believe in Christ, receive baptism, and leave behind his former beliefs.

His conversion came at a great cost. Rejected by his family and condemned by the king, Qardagh initially resisted the Persian forces before receiving a vision of St Stephen the Martyr, who called him to give his life for Christ rather than continue fighting.

Remaining faithful until the end, Qardagh accepted martyrdom and was stoned to death, with tradition remembering his own father as the first to cast a stone. He was buried in Erbil, where a church was later dedicated in his honour.

May the courage and unwavering faith of Mar Qardagh inspire us to remain steadfast in Christ, no matter the cost.

O Lord, when you desired, in your love, to show your kingship and the great glory of your coming to Simon, James and John, the chosen apostles, you took them up with you to Mount Tabor, and their faces were lit up and your clothes were like lightning with the radiance of your flesh, the spring of life; your Father cried out and confirmed your Sonship, and made your authority known. Therefore, make us worthy to delight in that same glory, and rejoice and be glad in you, as you spread over us the light of your Countenance!
