โThe fact of the matter is that the Early Christians who were thrown to the lions by pagan Rome were 100% Catholic in theology. They explicitly wrote about the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, the necessity of water baptism for the washing away of sins, and the authority of their bishops. Read the letters of Saint Ignatius of Antioch (110 AD), Saint Justin Martyr (150 AD), or Saint Irenaeus (180 AD). Pagan Rome did not hunt down people for believing in 'faith alone'; they slaughtered Catholics who refused to worship the pagan emperor.

โWho preserved the New Testament manuscripts during those 1,500 years before Protestantism was invented? It wasn't a secret underground sect of Protestants. It was Catholic monks who spent their entire lives hand-copying the scriptures in monasteries.

โThe deepest irony of your claim is that the phrase 'faith alone' (Sola Fide) does not appear anywhere in the entire New Testament as a formula for salvation except in one single verse, where it is explicitly rejected.
โLook at James 2:24: 'You see that a person is justified by works and NOT by faith alone.'
โThe only time the Holy Spirit inspired a biblical author to put the words 'faith' and 'alone' next to each other, it was to say that justification is not by it. In fact, when Martin Luther translated the Bible into German in the 16th century, he was so frustrated by this that he famously added the word 'alone' (allein) to Romans 3:28 where it did not exist in the original Greek text, and he called the Epistle of James an 'epistle of straw' because it contradicted his brand-new theology !
