Students from Pope John XXIII School arrived early for their tour and had the wonderful opportunity to witness a Bar Mitzvah rehearsal with Zac Borenstein and teacher John Lenn.

Tour guide Simon Horry shared the significance of a Bar Mitzvah in a young man’s life before introducing the students to our magnificent sanctuary.

A memorable glimpse into Jewish tradition, community and heritage. 💙

🕯️ Remembering Sylvia Rosenblum z”l

The Great Synagogue mourns the passing of Sylvia Rosenblum z”l, co-founder and first Director-Curator of the A.M. Rosenblum Jewish Museum.

In 1982, Sylvia and her husband, Rodney Rosenblum AM, brought their vision of a Jewish museum at The Great Synagogue to life — creating what became recognised as Australia’s first Jewish museum.

Through her dedication, passion and pioneering spirit, Sylvia helped preserve the stories, treasures and heritage of generations before us.

More than 40 years on, her legacy lives on through The Great Synagogue’s collection of Judaica, artworks and historic documents.

May her memory be a blessing. 🕯️

Giving Day has officially begun. It’s time to Lift Up the Great.

For almost 150 years, The Great Synagogue has held a special place in Australian Jewish life. Generations have walked through our doors for Shabbat and festivals, simchas, community events, special occasions and moments that stay with us for a lifetime.

As Rabbi Elton shares today, The Great was the first shule in the Southern Hemisphere to install a Shabbat lift. Forty years later, that lift needs to be replaced, and our building needs to move forward once again.

Ahead of the High Holidays, we’re delighted to be sharing a little something special with our Great members aged over 85.

Hand-delivered by members of our Board and special volunteers, these gifts are a small but meaningful way to celebrate our seniors and share a sense of connection as we prepare to welcome the New Year together.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting members at Montefiore, including Elizabeth and Bernard Levy, Sydney Young, Avril Symon and Erna Levy, with gifts for those living at home making their way to them soon.
