400 children in 3 plantation schools impacted by the cyclone and who did not have school stationery are soo very thankful for the exercise books, Pens and pencils. Many dont have the basics and are hidden away in plantation schools in the hill country. Sri Lanka is a developing country and if you are born into a poverty cycle its very tough. Education is a key to assisting kids and giving them an opportunity to improve their lives.
Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination and the free ways by pass the hidden poverty amongst plantation workers. This has gone on for generations. They are a minority community too. So not part of the mainstream. Teachers are unable to teach children who dont have a book or pen or pencil. One of our local partners in the Nuwara Eliya/Badulla district has helped to seek out several disadvantaged schools and we have purchased stationery direct from the factory! This distribution is very recent. This work is on going through the year helping children with education when funds are available. We will also be providing children with a gift pack in Sept that is shipped from Forest Baptist Church later in the year.
Do you have access to obsolete corporate goods such as: caps, bags, notebooks, rulers, pencils, pens tshirts and corporate goods? They are sooo beneficial to children and poor families in remote communities. If you can help pls contact Anne Salvador-Dunlop. Our work is purely networking and word of mouth. No sponsors as such and friends who assist through the year.
