Network Heaven

Network Heaven Helping disadvantaged children with school supplies and a small gift pack and to empower women in rural communities.

The work of Network Heaven commenced in 2001 with the Bethlehem Creche Project. Sr Florella a Carmalite nun working in the slum area of Sri Lanka feeds children 0 to 5 on a daily basis whilst their Mum's went to work. Their work was going from house to house as domestics, sweeping the streets and public areas, working on building sites etc. The request was that we sent each child a new set of clot

hes underwear and a few basics such as toiletry items colouring pencils some stationery and lolly bag. However, this work has now expanded over many years working with various Local Partners spread across Sri Lanka helping mainly children and women living in poverty. The aim is to send a Christmas Gift pack of new items because they are in a cycle of poverty that will only afford them others 2nd hand scraps for the rest of their life. We are aiming to help break this poverty cycle through education and assisting the children commence the school year with some basics. In 2014 almost 1500 children were helped. 2015 is also looking to be a similar number. Many children from the former war zones have also been included. They are from all ethnic backgrounds and religions. Poverty is sadly common to ALL of these children and their Mum's who struggle to put food on the table (if there is one) let alone purchase school uniforms and books and stationery.

Soap? soap? challenge! Looking for a small group or 3 or 4 individuals who care about poor communities in Sri Lanka (developping country) to commit to collecting a total of 250 cakes of soap for our September shipment. If we have 4 groups then each gift pack will have soap. Why soap?
Soap is inexpensive but when packed in the gift adds fragrance and a practical gift for the whole family.
We are talking of children who live in plantations and the lowest paid communities. So, its very beneficial.

Are you up to a challenge? Hopefully we are looking for 'new' people who are not already helping with this project in any way.

Just beware it will be a challenge to pack and box it and deliver in September. Taking up the challenge will bring a huge blessing to each child!

Preparation for “To Sri Lanka with Love 2023” continues at home. If you are interested please feel free to contact us!

Sr Shanthini AC a retired English teacher and Principal invited us to dinner in Kandy at Carmel Hill Convent and treated us to a delicious meal.
It was lovely to meet with her and some of the other sisters and hear about the work they do in the community. Sr Shanthini distributes our gifts to children in the central hills in the plantation sector.

We travelled by train from Ella to Badulla. It was good to meet with Fr Poncian our Network Heaven partner who has assisted with the distribution of school stationery to many school children in the plantation sector.

The train was late arriving so plans to meet some students didnt work out on the day.

This year we hope to send gifts to children at a pre schools run by the Sisters of a Dominican order in Passara. We have appeoximately 60 or so pre school agef children.
If you'd like to help with colour pencils, a cake of soap and a hand towel or face washer it would be a great help.

400 children in 3 plantation schools impacted by the cyclone and who did not have school stationery are soo very thankful for the exercise books, Pens and pencils. Many dont have the basics and are hidden away in plantation schools in the hill country. Sri Lanka is a developing country and if you are born into a poverty cycle its very tough. Education is a key to assisting kids and giving them an opportunity to improve their lives.

Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination and the free ways by pass the hidden poverty amongst plantation workers. This has gone on for generations. They are a minority community too. So not part of the mainstream. Teachers are unable to teach children who dont have a book or pen or pencil. One of our local partners in the Nuwara Eliya/Badulla district has helped to seek out several disadvantaged schools and we have purchased stationery direct from the factory! This distribution is very recent. This work is on going through the year helping children with education when funds are available. We will also be providing children with a gift pack in Sept that is shipped from Forest Baptist Church later in the year.
Do you have access to obsolete corporate goods such as: caps, bags, notebooks, rulers, pencils, pens tshirts and corporate goods? They are sooo beneficial to children and poor families in remote communities. If you can help pls contact Anne Salvador-Dunlop. Our work is purely networking and word of mouth. No sponsors as such and friends who assist through the year.

Each year we have provide primary school students in rural areas with Sinhala, Tamil and English alphabet sheets as well as TimesTables. These laminated sheets are prohibitively expensive and out of reach for students as well as the schools. Yet a valuable learning tool. Any excess in small quantities is given to mainly primary schools in the plantation sector and pre schools. The laminated sheets will serve students for a number of years. Here are some if the children with tamil alphabets and on the reverse is the sinhala alphabet. Can you help print and laminate several hundred of these? The same with English alphabets is needed? We also make up snakes and ladder games for primary age students. They include a laminated sheet. Help is needed to get several hundred to disadvantaged school students and schools. Can you print double sided and laminate? Ideal for school students doing Duke of Ed program or volunteering! We need lots😀

These children's village including their school went underwater during the cyclone that hit Sri Lanka in Nov 2025. Many lost all their belongings. So the gift pack was a real delight for our partner who distributed them and the principal and stsff at the school were sooo happy for the children. This is a school innthe Eastern priovince in Sri Lanka and way off the beaten track. The delay was the impact of road repairs and hence difficulty of arranging transportation to thr children at the school. Enjoy the photos.

More photos from a plantation in Sri Lanka's low country provibce Ruhuna. Whilst they were impacted by the cyclone the people in these plantations were spared extensive damage.

Our gifts for the children consisted of a new set of clothes, underwear, school pack a small toy from Peninsular senior citizens Toy Recycle and Boomerang Bags Northern Beaches - Kimbriki, a cake of soap and face washer.
