President of the Uniting Church in Australia, Rev Charissa Suli, has urgently called for peace and the protection of human life amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

In an official statement, Rev Suli emphasises that it is civilians bearing the heaviest toll and that war is not an abstract issue but deeply personal – touching families, displacing communities and inflicting long-lasting wounds.

“Many thousands of families now face the uncertainty of displacement and refuge, contributing to a growing humanitarian crisis affecting civilians across the region,” the President said.

“We urge governments and the international community to ensure protection and humanitarian assistance for refugees and displaced people whose lives have been upended by this conflict.”

Her statement also reiterates the Uniting Church’s longstanding commitment to peace, and urged governments and international leaders to prioritise diplomatic solutions, and uphold international law.

Rev Suli challenges members of the Uniting Church to respond in faith – through prayer for peace, support for humanitarian efforts, and advocacy for dialogue over destruction.

Next Monday, the President will host an evening of online prayer over Zoom.

• Existing Ministries Focus – support and coordinate established programs such as Mainly Music and Friends Club

We’re looking for a person who are passionate about community connection, enjoy working with volunteers, and are keen to serve local families and migrants in a welcoming, Christ-centred environment. Mandarin/English bilingual skills are highly valued.

Our Loving Tribute from CUC, to the 15 people who lost their lives last Sunday in the massacre on Bondi Beach last Sunday 14.12.2015. This morning, we wake with heavy hearts following the tragic events at Bondi.

As the Uniting Church in Australia, we hold in prayer all who have been affected — those who have lost loved ones, those who are injured and recovering, the first responders and health workers, and the wider community carrying shock and grief.

We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and with all who were gathered in peace. Violence has no place in our shared life, and fear must not have the final word.

In the light of Christ, we commit ourselves again to compassion, care for one another, and the work of peace. May God’s love hold all who are hurting today.

God of mercy and peace,
we come to you with hearts that are tired and grieving.
We entrust to you the lives lost,
the wounded,
and all who are holding sorrow this day.

Surround the Jewish community and all who have been affected
with comfort, safety, and hope.
Strengthen those who serve and protect,
and grant wisdom and gentleness to all who lead and respond.

In a world shaken by violence,
teach us again the way of Christ —
the way of love, courage, and peace.
Hold us, heal us, and lead us forward.

When sharing photos on social media, the Uniting Church in Australia requires that written permission be obtained from the parent or guardian of all children appearing in any photograph or footage. This ensures that the child is willing to allow their image to be used. If a person refuses permission, the image must not be used. Additionally, the church prohibits the taking and sharing of embarrassing or offensive photos or videos during services or events.

May I ask that those who post on this site do so with permission from those individual people whose photos and faces are in the photos.
