MOMENTS FROM YESTERDAY’S SENIOR CITIZENS PARÉA WITH YÉVMA SYNTROFIÁS (LUNCH IN GOOD COMPANY)

There is never a dull moment when our Senior Citizens gather in the Church Hall for their Thursday fun day away from the four walls of their TV room.

Thank you to the Philoptochos Convenor Toula Kyriazopoulos, the Philoptochos Adviser Presbytera Patricia Scoutas and the entire Philoptochos Team for organizing the Thursday Seniors’ Day with so much love and respect shown by their attention to detail.

WE WISH THAT MORE SENIORS COULD ATTEND THIS AMAZING GATHERING EVERY THURSDAY

YESTERDAY AFTERNOON OUR PARISH WELCOMED HIS GRACE BISHOP CHRYSOSTOMOS OF BOUKOMBA AND WEST TANZANIA - AFRICA

With the blessing of our Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, it was an honour for our Parish to receive His Grace Bishop Chrysostomos who conducted the Supplicatory Canon to the Mother of our Lord.

His Grace spoke to the faithful in general about the history of Orthodox Missionary work in Africa then focused on His own Diocese, explaining the “miracles of Christ” in establishing churches, orphanages and a co-educational school with 2,000 students.

As the week following Pentecost has been dedicated by the Eparchial Holy Synod of Australia as a week dedicated to overseas missions, St Spyridon Parish donated $2,500, the St Spyridon Philoptochos donated $2,500 and the faithful in attendance donated $1,065, making a total of $6,065 which His Grace joyfully announced that this generous offering would cover the salaries of all His priests for a whole week.

WHAT A BLESSING FOR OUR PARISH TO RECEIVE BISHOP CHRYSOSTOMOS

The ENGLISH Orthros and Divine Liturgy was conducted last night by Father Stavros with a fervent congregation who have accepted the switch from Saturdays to Mondays.

We have lost some who cannot make it on Mondays but have gained others who could not make it on Saturdays.

Thank you to Patricia Souleles who has been a constant with Katerina Mavrolefteros for chanting duties for over three decades.

Please support our English Service on the first Monday of every month. We know it means a lot to many people. And St Spyridon Parish will be here for you.

THE FAITHFUL CAME AND KNELT FOR THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Young mums and dads holding babies, elderly faithful, young people and children, were truly absorbed in the Kneeling Service for Pentecost today.

As our Priests focused on the emotional reading of the three long Prayers, we prayed to God the Holy Trinity to repose our departed mothers, fathers, spouses and children in Heaven. At the same time, we asked God to forgive us our sins as we gradually move closer to our own departure.

SO LONG AS WE CHOOSE GOD EVERY DAY HE WILL ABIDE IN US AND WE WILL BE STRONG, NO MATTER WHAT

Our children are taught from very young. We pray continuously that these simple sessions of spiritual education are followed up by their families at home. This is the beautiful role that every yiayia is especially called to play a great role. May God the Holy Spirit enlighten all of us.

In preparation for Pentecost, our KM1 students explored the story of the Holy Spirit coming as “tongues of fire.”
They had so much fun creating their own flame headbands and learning about this special feast day.

Sunday Matins & Divine Liturgy - 31st May 2026 - St Spyridon, Sydney

Saints and Feasts: Holy Pentecost; Hermias the Martyr at Comana; Eustathios, Patriarch of Constantinople; Eusebius and Haralambos the Monk-martyrs

Matins Gospel Reading: John 20:19-23
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were gathered, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Epistle Reading: Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11
WHEN THE DAY of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God."

Gospel Reading: John 7:37-52; 8:12
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
