About ACYA and its Evolution
The official Church youth body was established by Father Aramais Mirzaian in 1960 as the Armenian Church Younger Set (ACYS). In the 1970s, the Armenian Church Youth Auxiliary (ACYA) reformed with the primary objective of keeping young Armenians together through cultural, social and sporting activities. ACYA established soccer teams, basketball teams, the Sevan Dance G
roup, and the Hai Pem Theatrical Group during these years. In 2004, ACYA was revived with the aim of bringing youth into the fold of the church again. From 2004 to 2009, a program called Y-Connect was run with a focus on engaging youth aged 12-18 years in fortnightly gatherings by way of a mentoring program by young adult team leaders. In 2005, with the arrival of Father Vardan Navasardyan, a young adults Bible Study group, BSYG, evolved. Through this group, a new youth choir emerged the Vartanants Choir. Today, the Armenian Church Youth of Australia (ACYA) Sydney continues with a faithful, committed group of 20-30 members made up of young adults who evolved from the Karasoun Mangounk Choir and young Armenians who recently migrated to Australia.
