In the Bible, there is a famous story about a rich man questioning Jesus. "Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, 'Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?'" (Matthew 19:16, NIV). Jesus responded:
"If you want to ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐, keep the commandments." (Matthew 19:17, NIV)
We often interpret "life" in this context as "eternal life." Thus, the Chinese Union Version translates it directly as "If you want to enter eternal life, keep the commandments" (Matthew 19:17, CUV). But is this really what Jesus meant, or are we imposing our own interpretation? Looking at the Greek text:
Matthew 19:16
"And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐?" (KJV)
Matthew 19:17
"And he said unto him, โนWhy callest thou me good?โบ [there is] โนnone good but one,โบ [that is], โนGod: but if thou wilt enter into ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐, keep the commandments.โบ" (KJV)
In Jesus' response, the word "ฮถฯฮฎฮฝ" translates to "life," while the young man asked about "ฮถฯแฝดฮฝ ฮฑแผฐฯฮฝฮนฮฟฮฝ," meaning "eternal life." If Jesus meant that keeping the commandments would grant eternal life, why would He omit the crucial word "ฮฑแผฐฯฮฝฮนฮฟฮฝ"? Letting go of our biased interpretation, we see that Jesus meant, "If you want to enter life, keep the commandments." This is similar to God's instruction to Moses in Deuteronomy 5:29: "Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!" In other words, keeping the commandments leads to blessings in life.
With this understanding, we can easily comprehend the young man's follow-up question in Matthew 19:18-20: "Which ones?" he inquired. Jesus replied, "โYou shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,โ and โlove your neighbor as yourself.โ" The young man said, "๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฌ๐ ๐ ๐ก๐๐ฏ๐ ๐ค๐๐ฉ๐ญ. It is because Jesus' initial response did not fully address how to attain eternal life, that the young man continued to ask
We all know the story's conclusion: "Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.' When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.'" (Matthew 19:21-24, NIV)
So how can we attain eternal life? Jesus tells us, "And ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ ๐ก๐๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐๐ค๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ ๐ก๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐๐ก ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง๐ก๐๐ซ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐." (Matthew 19:29, NIV)
In Matthew 8:21-22, Jesus further emphasizes this principle from a different angle: "Another disciple said to him, 'Lord, first let me go and bury my father.' But Jesus told him, 'Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.'" How can โthe deadโ bury the dead? Jesus means that those who are preoccupied with worldly possessions, emotions, and fame and cannot follow Him can not get external life. They will eventually die like everyone else.
Today most people are wealthier than the rich man in Jesus' time. We worry daily about our possessions, emotions, and fame, and we chase after more. Can we enter the kingdom of heaven? Clearly not.
