Fr Vince Comple OSJ, new Chaplain of our Catholic port ministry, celebrated Mass onboard a ship.

Also, Garry Hall, volunteer, welcomed the seafarers at the Centre.

STELLA MARIS NEWCASTLE Chaplaincy

On Tuesday, newly installed Bishop of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, Bishop Michael Kennedy, visited the Seafarers Centre in Wickham, Newcastle for the first time. He was welcomed by the Senior Mission to Seafarers Chaplain, Rev. Garry Dodd, Centre manager, Mrs Christine Smith, and Stella Maris Chaplain Bernadette Barry.

Also visiting the Centre were 7 Filipino seafarers enjoying a few hours on shore. Bishop Michael was delighted to meet them as they were to meet him. After asking them about their work and life on board a bulk carrier, Bishop Michael asked about their families, particularly those who were married and with a family. Bishop Michael gave a very special blessing to those present and for all seafarers and their families.

Bishop Michael, having only lived and served in rural dioceses, found the work of the seafarers incredibly interesting and was amazed at the breadth of services provided to them by the Mission to Seafarers and Sella Maris organisations.

Over Afternoon Tea he asked many questions about the ministry provided by the centre covering the roles of the chaplains, the centre management, the volunteers and the level of support provided by the community.

The staff of the centre and the volunteers look forward to more visits from Bishop Michael in the years ahead.

Sr Mary has over 50 volunteers of different ages and backgrounds who assist her at the port at different times of the year.

STELLA MARIS CHAPLAINCY Newcastle

The Newcastle Seafarers Centre has Mass on the last Thursday of each month.

Yesterday, the captain and a number of the crew of the ship Reihou joined Fr Paul Chackankunnel, Stella Maris Chaplain, Bernadette Barry, volunteers Rick and Meryl McCosker and Dave Tull and some Filipino-Australian visitors for Mass.

The crew of the Reihou are all from the Philippines and commence their 15 day journey to Japan today.

They are mostly at sea for their 9 month contract period and Fr Paul prayed especially for their safety and for their families.

Suzanne, who has been a Stella Maris volunteer for 30 years (living in Canberra), joined Sr Mary.
