The only thing that counts...

The Beatles famously sang that all you need is love.

And they were right, in a way – love, after all, is the fulfilment of the law. If you have love you have everything you need to stand before God.

The problem is we too often fall short of the high bar of love.

For the Apostle Paul there is only one thing that matters in life (and death). It's not fame or fortune, status or celebrity – it's – and if you've been following his argument in Galatians you'll know the answer – faith in Jesus Christ (Gal 5:6).

Why so important?

Faith receives the love of God on offer to us in Jesus. Faith receives that which we need. Faith grabs hold of the gift of salvation and never lets go. If we have faith we have love thrown in to the bargain – Jesus' life of love becomes ours.

In life you might not always get from God that which you want – a long life, a happy life, a successful life, a life of leisure and pleasure, a life of health and wealth.

But you are offered what you truly need: forgiveness, righteousness, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. To get them, all you need is ... faith.

Joy to the World

You know you're on the wrong religious track if your faith leaves you miserable. Joy is the secret weapon of the Christian life – joy even in hard times. Why? Because Christ on the Cross has won us eternal life. God has shown us how much he loves us, and now we're his sons and daughters, co-heirs with Christ.

The false gospel of Paul's opponents in Galatia promised much, but it failed to deliver – and it left the people miserable. It robbed them of their inheritance and stole their assurance, increasing their anxiety and weighing them down.

In our day, too, the false gospels of the world promise so much, but fail to deliver – whether they are the false gospel of prosperity, other faiths, or secular creeds of social justice – they all end in misery.

Christ, though, promises glory. The path might be beset with sacrifice and suffering – but Christ promises joy in the journey.

So never settle for misery. Grace leads to faith. Faith produces love. Love brings joy. And joy is the wind in the sails that leads us home.

The proof is in the (fruit) pudding...

Last week came the news that one of the foremost modern proponents of atheism – a woman name Ayaan Hirsi Ali – has become a Christian.

The reason for her conversion? The culture that Christianity has produced is the best culture there's ever been, according to Ali. Not that it's perfect – but it's better than the rest. Christianity, she says, just works.

Ali's conversion raises an interesting point – what Jesus says of individuals is true of societies as well – "By their fruit you will recognise them ... A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit."

A society shaped by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, as well as his teachings and example, will be a good society. Beliefs matter – they inform our behaviour, individually and corporately.

But take away belief and it's like you've cut a tree off at the root. The tree will live on for a while and then die and wither away.

That's why Paul's example in Galatians is so important for us today. Paul fights for the people he loves. People's faith defines their future. He won't let them wander away easily. And we shouldn't let our world wander away easily, either. Let's fight, like Paul, that those we love may enjoy the blessings of the faith – in this life and the next.

Lord God,
We come before you in horror and dismay at what we are seeing taking place in the land where Jesus, Israel’s long-awaited Messiah, once walked.
We lift up to you today the state of Israel and the Palestinian lands.
We pray in shock, Lord, at the depravity of which we humans are capable, and we ask you God to stay the hands of evil at this time.
We ask Lord for wisdom and a true sense of righteousness for the leaders of Israel and Palestine, and we ask Lord for a spirit of service and love for the people you have entrusted to their care.
We pray other international leaders that they would know how best to chart a new and lasting path of peace in these war-torn and hate-filled lands.
We pray for our brothers and sister in the faith of Jesus caught up in this terrible situation. We ask for protection for them and success in their mission to promote the Prince of Peace in the land in which he has been so largely rejected.
We pray too you would hasten the day when nation would no longer take up sword against nation, nor train for war anymore (Is 2:4), when your kingdom comes and your will is fully and finally done.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
