Teej Mahotsav 2026 to Turn Sydney into a Platform of Prayer, Solidarity and Support for Nepal
Sydney: The Nepalese Hindu Society of Australia (NHSA) is set to bring together the Nepalese community and the wider Australian community in Sydney for Teej Mahotsav 2026, transforming its annual celebration into a special day of prayer, solidarity, fundraising and humanitarian support for those affected by the recent catastrophic flash floods and landslides in Nepal.
Nepalese Hindu Society of Australia Recasts Annual Teej Celebration as a Humanitarian Gathering Amid Catastrophic Floods and Landslides
The event is scheduled for Monday, 14 September 2026, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at Burwood Park, Burwood, and is expected to attract a substantial gathering of community members, supporters, well-wishers and representatives from the wider Australian community.
From Celebration to Compassion
Nepal is facing immense hardship following the devastating natural disasters, with communities across the country confronting loss, displacement and destruction. While living in Australia, members of the Nepalese diaspora continue to feel a deep emotional connection with their homeland and are seeking meaningful ways to support those affected.
Prayer, Fundraising, Culture and Community Unity to Come Together at Burwood Park on 14 September
Speaking to Lukla TV, NHSA President Laxmi Bastakoti said the pre-planned Teej Mahotsav would go ahead, but with a significantly different purpose this year.
โAmid the chaos, we would like to make it clear that the pre-planned Teej Mahotsav 2026 is on. Rather than being recreational, this yearโs celebration will focus on group prayer, fundraising and humanitarian support. It will be dedicated to prayer, solidarity and support for Nepal. Let us come together as one community to pray for those affected, remember those we have lost, and stand united for Nepal.โ
A Day of Prayer and Remembrance
The programme will begin with preparations for the religious ceremonies at 9:00 am, followed by puja and darshan for devotees from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, with guidance and assistance from the Gurus.
From 10:00 to 10:45 am, a Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva will be performed as a prayer for the speedy recovery, health and wellbeing of those affected by the disasters.
The Madhyahna Aarti will take place at 12:00 noon, followed by Bhagwat Path from 12:00 to 12:20 pm, featuring the recitation of Chapter 31 of Shrimad Bhagwat by the Gurus. The prayer will be dedicated to the peace and liberation of the souls who lost their lives in the disasters.
Culture, Heritage and Community Spirit
From 1:00 pm onwards, the venue will come alive with a Nepali Cultural Programme, celebrating Nepalโs rich traditions, culture and heritage through authentic cultural performances.
The programme will provide an opportunity for the community to come together not only in prayer and solidarity but also to celebrate the cultural heritage that continues to connect Nepalese Australians with their homeland.
Formal Programme and Tribute to the Victims
The formal programme is scheduled from 5:00 to 5:45 pm and will include:
- Welcome and introduction of the Hon. Premier and distinguished VIP guests
* One-minute silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives
* Shanti Path by the Gurus
* Addresses by distinguished VIP guests
* Presentation of tokens of love to VIP guests
* Vote of thanks by the President of NHSA
Maha Aarti for Nepal
From 5:45 to 7:00 pm, preparations will be made for the evening Aarti and devoteesโ puja.
The day will culminate at 7:00 pm with Maha Aarti, a collective prayer for peace, healing, strength and hope for Nepal.
The programme will conclude at 8:00 pm.
