Statement by the Catholic Church in Egypt

The Catholic Church in Egypt is following with great concern the messages that have been circulated which included offensive expressions toward His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

While the Church expresses its deep regret for any discourse that undermines the dignity of religious symbols, it also reaffirms at the same time its firm commitment to the spirit of the Gospel, which calls us to respond to offense with love.

The Church calls upon its children, as well as all believers, to pray so that peace may prevail in the world, following the words of the Lord Jesus Christ:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”

May God preserve the world in peace and grant everyone the grace of wisdom and love to build peace.
