The Bicolano’s faith and devotion to INA (Mother) is a journey from ancient times to the present, at the center of which was the role of the family’s ina (mother) enriched in time by INA’s (Virgin Mary’s) spiritual motherhood. This historical continuity in faith affirms Bicolano’s religiosity and the belief that ‘family is a domestic church’ must be propagated. The home is the first school of the Christian life where all learn love, repeated forgiveness, and prayerful worship. The annual September celebration of the festivity of Our Lady of Penafrancia, the Queen of Bicol Region, in Naga City has remained as the most celebrated religious and socio-cultural tradition in the Philippines which Bicolanos of New South Wales, Australia have always take pride. With the desire to bring this tradition to the awareness of all Bicolanos and non-Bicolanos alike, an interim group was formed in early 2006 to organise a fiesta in Sydney. This desire by the group was brought to reality on the 16th of September 2006 with a concelebrated mass and a fluvial procession of the replica of Our Lady of Penafrancia along the Parramatta River from Melrose Park Wharf and ended at Sydney Olympic Wharf for the first time in Australia. Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia-Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS) is committed to propagating Marian devotion and faith through Our Lady of Penafrancia by inspiring, informing and enabling families to grow in their spiritual lives for it is in the family that first ideas about life and love, and about God and His Church are formed. On the 15th of September 2026, the fourth day of the Association Novena arrives in Sydney, Australia.

From the harbour city, the Archdiocese of Sydney's own Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia community kneels in prayer — Ina, present even beneath the Southern Cross.

May that same star guide our own small decisions today, and may Ina help us choose the path that leads always back to her Son.

Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS)-Australia is indeed grateful for the gracious presence of Ms Greg Marie Marino, the Philippine Consul General of Sydney and her family as NUSPAS celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia last Saturday.

The presence of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney NSW at our annual Penafrancia Fiesta recognises the work that Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS)-Australia in promoting not just the unique Marian devotion in Sydney but also the cultural and religious activities that comes with the celebrations supporting the Penafrancia 2026 Theme - Ina, nurturing a growing Church.

PH CONSULATE JOINS NUESTRA SEÑORA DE PEÑAFRANCIA DEVOTEES FOR NUSPAS FIESTA 2026

12 September 2026, Sydney - On behalf of the Consulate General of the Philippines in Sydney, Consul General Greg Marie C. Mariño joined members of the Filipino community as they celebrated the Feast of Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia (Our Lady of Peñafrancia) at the St. John of God Parish Church in Auburn, New South Wales.

The crowd waved yellow and white handkerchiefs as devotees solemnly made their way into the church, carrying the statue of Our Lady on their shoulders. The event was organized by the Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia - Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS), with a program that included a fluvial procession on the Parramatta River, a concelebrated mass, and a community fellowship and cultural program.

Speaking during the community fellowship, Consul General Mariño underscored the significance of “Ina” as the patroness of the Bicol region and the foundational values carried by Filipinos wherever they go. “By bringing this cherished devotion from the banks of the Bicol River to the shores of Australia, you do something truly remarkable: you bring a piece of home with you,” she remarked.

The history of the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia in the Philippines can be traced to the 18th century. Since then, the tradition has grown and become an integral part of the Bicol region’s cultural and religious life. END.

Thanks Julia Finn MP for your presence at our 20th Year celebration of the Feast of our Lady of Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS)-Australia yesterday.

Though not feeling well, you came in solidarity with this year's theme "Ina Nurturing a Growing Church" in recognition of the elevation of the Nueva Caceres as an Archdiocese as a testimony of your fidelity to a "Church where everyone belongs and everyone has a role to play."
