Today is the Second Sunday of Easter, the Sunday of Divine Mercy. We rejoice in meeting the One who is the First and the Last, who defeated death and is alive. The Lord gives us the power of the Holy Spirit to break the chains of evil, serve the Lord with love and obedience, and reign with Christ in glory.

We join the College of Cardinals in praying for the opening of the Conclave to elect the next pope.

As most of you would already be aware, our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, died this morning (Rome time).

Below is a statement issued by the Vatican:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

At 7.35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was devoted to service to the Lord and His Church.

He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized.

With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love the One and Triune God.”

Let us unite with the whole church as we pray for the eternal rest of Pope Francis and give thanks to God for his generous service over the past 12 years.
