“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:21-24)
On this Good Friday, we reflect on the immense sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24 reminds us that Jesus bore our sins in his body on the cross, taking our place and paying the price for our sins so that we could be reconciled to God. In a world filled with challenges and burdens, we find comfort in knowing that Jesus is the one who carries them for us. He carried the weight of our mistakes, our failures, our worries, our pains, our struggles and sins, so that we can find rest in Him.
But the message of the cross goes beyond forgiveness and salvation. It also calls us to respond in a specific way. As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate his example, to live our lives in a way that reflects the righteousness that Jesus has granted us. 1 Peter 2:21 tells us that Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example to follow in his steps. Jesus committed no sin, and he did not retaliate or make threats when he was insulted and suffered unjustly. He entrusted himself to God, who judges justly. Jesus' response to suffering was one of humility, forgiveness, and submission to God's will.
As recipients of his grace, we are called to live in the same manner. We are called to die to sins and live for righteousness, just as Jesus did. We are called to respond to insults and suffering with grace, forgiveness, and trust in God's justice. We are called to imitate Jesus in our words, deeds, and attitudes, as we strive to reflect his character to the world.
The wounds of Jesus on the cross are a reminder of the great cost of our redemption. By his wounds, we have been healed and made righteous. Therefore, let us live our lives in a way that honours his sacrifice. Let us continually strive to follow the example of Jesus, who loved us unconditionally and showed us the way to live in righteousness. And let us emulate his compassion by carrying each other’s burdens as Jesus did for us.
