On Saturday 30 May 2026, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Christophoros of Kerasounta, Chancellor of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, addressed a Seminar for all Sunday School teachers of New South Wales.

Held at the Orthodox Mission Centre, of the Greek Orthodox Christian Society in Kingsgrove, around 100 teachers attended from across the parishes of NSW.

His Grace Bishop Christophoros delivered the keynote address for this seminar, titled “The Liturgical Life as an essential ingredient for the Sunday School Teacher”.

His Grace explaining how the teaching of God, including Sunday School, is impossible outside the liturgical life of the Church. He discussed that for the sacred ministry of Sunday School to occur, the teacher must live an active life within the Church so that they can express the joy of encountering Christ, to their students.

The key focus of His Grace’s address was that the calling of the Sunday School teacher is far deeper than just teaching abstract information about God and the Faith, but rather the teacher should be one who actively encounters Christ through prayer, worship, and the sacramental life of the Church. “The task is not merely to teach children about Christ, but to introduce them to the living Christ Himself.”

“Before becoming a teacher of the faith, we must first be a worshipper. Before speaking about Christ, we must have learned to stand before Him in both private prayer and corporate worship. Before seeking to communicate the joy of the Gospel, we must have personally tasted that joy within the liturgical life of the Church.”

His Grace concluded by reminding the teachers that children may forget many of the lessons they hear, but they will remember if, through their teacher, they encountered “the joy, the peace, and the love of Christ”.

The Sunday School teachers were greatly edified and inspired by the words of Bishop Christophoros and warmly thanked him with a small gift as a token of their gratitude.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PASCHAL DAY 2026

In a spirit of joy celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord, over 300 children from the Sunday Schools of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia gathered for a special ‘Paschal Day’ on Bright Wednesday, 15th April 2026.

The event was kindly hosted by the Parish of St Spyridon, Kingsford, in conjunction with St Spyridon College, on its beautiful grounds at the Senior Campus in Maroubra.

Children had gathered from all parishes of Sydney, greeting each other with the ‘Christ is Risen’. They split into their corresponding age groups and participated in a range of games and Paschal-themed activities, including making paper lanterns, beaded crosses, key rings, various sports, and an Easter egg hunt.

The children then gathered together in the Sports and Performing Arts Centre of St Spyridon College where they chanted the ‘Christ is Risen’ beautifully, in unison, as well as the Dismissal Hymn of St Spyridon the Wonderworker. Fr Stavros Ivanos, Assistant Priest at St Spyridon Parish, addressed the children with much joy, sharing the glorious message of the Resurrection.

Finally, the children shared a paschal meal all together, making new friends and enjoying the beautiful weather that God had blessed them with.

The Sunday School Committee of NSW would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Parish of St Spyridon, the Parish Priests Fr Steven Scoutas and Fr Stavros Ivanos, the Parish President Mr Elias Economou, and the Head of St Spyridon College Mrs Amelia Katsogiannis together with a number of generous and helpful staff for hosting and supporting this blessed event for the children of our Church.

The Joy After Midnight - A short fictional story on experiencing the Paschal Divine Liturgy:

Daniel stood outside the glowing doors of the parish of St Joachim and St Anna, checking his phone as he waited.

He came every year.

Not because he was particularly devout. Not because he fasted strictly, or attended the mid week services, or even fully understood the long hymns that seemed to stretch endlessly into the night.

He came because it was tradition. Because at midnight you held a candle, heard “Christ is Risen,” saw a few familiar faces, and went home to magiritsa.

That was the rhythm.

Inside, the church was full. The icons shimmered. The scent of beeswax lingered in the air. As midnight approached, the lights dimmed, and a hush fell. From the altar, a single flame appeared.

“Come, receive the Light…”

The flame moved from person to person. Daniel leaned forward and lit his thin white candle. The fire trembled at its tip, small but alive. They walked in a procession outside.

“Christ is Risen!”

“Truly He is Risen!”

The words burst from hundreds of voices. People smiled and embraced.

Daniel joined in, exchanging greetings, glancing at his watch.

12:07am.

He turned toward the gate, following the familiar flow of people beginning to leave. This was the moment he knew — the natural ending point of the Easter service.

But then he paused.

Through the open doors, he could see the priest re-entering the church, now vested in bright white. The chanting had begun again — no longer solemn, but full of life, almost radiant.

He hesitated. He wasn’t sure why.

Perhaps it was curiosity. Or simply the sense that something was continuing — something he had never really stayed to experience.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to stay, he thought.

He walked inside.

Inside, the crowd was thinner now. The vastness of the church felt different — less crowded, more intimate. The priest’s voice rang clearly:

“It is the day of Resurrection! Let us be radiant, O people!”

Radiant.

Daniel looked around. The remaining faithful were not many, but they sang with a fullness he hadn’t noticed before. No one seemed rushed. No one was checking a watch.

That Liturgy was the most beautiful Daniel had experienced.

Then came the homily of John Chrysostom.
“If any be devout and love God, let him enjoy this fair and radiant triumph…”

The reading was steady, unhurried.

“If any have come at the eleventh hour…”
Daniel gave a faint, almost amused breath.

That’s me, he thought.

Not distant from faith — but not especially close either. Always somewhere in between.

“Let no one weep… for pardon has shone forth from the tomb.”

There was no pressure, no expectation. Just an open invitation, offered without condition.

When the final proclamation came again —
“Christ is Risen!”
— he answered more deliberately this time.
“Truly He is Risen.”

Daniel thought of how quickly he had been ready to leave. To take the flame home, let it trace a soot cross above the door, and move on unchanged.

But here, staying — simply staying — he felt something shift.

When he stepped outside later, the night had settled into stillness. The crowds were gone. The street was quiet.

Nothing around him had changed. But something within him had.

He realized that for years, he had experienced Pascha as a beautiful moment — something to witness, to celebrate briefly, and then carry home.

Tonight, he had stayed a little longer.

And in doing so, he had discovered something just as beautiful: that the joy of the Resurrection doesn’t end at midnight. It unfolds, waiting for anyone willing to remain and receive it.

As he walked to his car, the words stayed with him — not as an obligation, but as a quiet invitation.

Tonight, Daniel discovered that the Resurrection was an invitation.

And for the first time, he had stayed long enough to hear it.

Blessing and Commencement of the 2026 Sunday School Year

The Sunday of Orthodoxy was celebrated with spiritual joy and splendour at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of our Lady in Redfern, presided by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, and co-celebrated with Their Graces Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia and Bishop Christophoros of Kerasounta.

The Sunday School Teachers of NSW had gathered to participate in the Divine Liturgy and to receive the blessing of their spiritual father and shepherd, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the procession of Holy Icons took place, followed by the proclamation of the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

In his sermon, His Eminence spoke about the Orthodox Christian teaching on peace, important for both the internal spiritual state of the human person, and also for the external state of society. He reminded the faithful that at the start of the Divine Liturgy, the Church makes an entreaty for peace, with three specific petitions.

His Eminence then addressed the Sunday School teachers, encouraging them to continue with zeal in planting the word of God in the hearts of the children of the Church. He urged them to emphasise the Church’s teaching on peace, so that the children can gain proper spiritual foundations. His Eminence concluded by expressing his paternal wishes for a blessed and fruitful Sunday School year.

The week prior, His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, attended a meeting with all Sunday School teachers at the Orthodox Mission Centre of the Greek Orthodox Christian Society in Kingsgrove.

Sunday School classes begin on Sunday 8 March 2026. Parents can register their children for Sunday School at the link: https://sundayschool.lychnos.org/registration/
