Today we celebrate Saint Germaine Cousin, a humble French shepherdess who endured illness, physical disability, neglect, and mistreatment with remarkable faith and trust in God. Despite her hardships, she remained devoted to prayer, the Holy Eucharist, and caring for the poor.
One of the most famous events in her life occurred when a rain-swollen stream blocked her path to Mass. Villagers later testified that as Germaine approached, the waters parted, allowing her to cross safely and dry-footedโreminiscent of the Red Sea parting for the Israelites in the time of Moses.
Germaine died unexpectedly at just 22 years of age. Decades later, when her tomb was opened, her body was found to be remarkably preserved. Numerous miracles of healing were reported through her intercession, leading to the opening of her cause for beatification.
May Saint Germaine remind us that holiness is not measured by earthly success, but by faithfulness to God in every circumstance.
