IMAM AZAM (rahmatullahi alayh) LEAVES A DAHRI (ATHEIST) SPEECHLESS
A Dahri (believing in the pre-eternity of the universe and thus rejecting Allah Ta‘ala) from the Roman lands came to Basra and debated Muslim scholars.
Hadrat Imam Azam and his Ustad (teacher) Hadrat Hammad (rahmatullahi alayhima) went to the place where the debate was taking place.
The atheist stood up on the raised platform and challenged the crowd of scholars to debate. Hadrat Imam Azam (rahmatullahi alayh) stepped forward.
The atheist looked down upon him, looking at his young age. However, young Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) was courageous and proposed to him to begin with a question. The dahri asked:
“How is the existence of something which has no beginning and end be possible?”
“Do you know about numbers?” asked Imam Azam (rahimahullah).
“Yes, I do” replied Dahri.
“So, what comes before number 1?”
The Dahri replied: “Number one is the first of numbers. There is no number before it.” (0 ‘Zero’ was not introduced then) Upon that answer, Imam Azam (rahimahullah) said:
“Considering nothing precedes number 1, which is just a symbol, how is it possible to think of something that can come before Allah Ta‘ala, who is One (1) in its true sense?” Failing to find an answer to the response, Dahri proceeded with his second question:
“Everything has a direction. So, what is the direction of Allah?” Imam Azam (rahmatullahi alayh) asked a counter-question: “When you light a candle, to which direction does its light cast? Which direction will be deprived of its light? The Dahri replied:
“The candlelight does not cast towards one particular direction; it casts in every direction.” Imam Azam (rahimahullah) said:
“If that is the case, how can you say that He occupies one direction and deny that He is present everywhere?” The Dahri was speechless and moved on to his third question:
Every object needs a place (to occupy). So, where is the (dwelling) place of Allah?”
Upon that question, Imam Azam (rahmatullahi alayh) took a glass of milk and asked: “Does this milk contain fat? If yes, where is it?”
The atheist answered: “The fat is not in one certain space, it is everywhere.” Imam Azam (rahmatullahi alayh) said:
“If this is the case about a temporary object, how can you think of a certain space about Allah Ta‘ala who encompasses everything? He is free from occupying a space.”
The atheist was tongue-tied and asked his next question: “What is Allah engaged in now?”
Hadrat Imam said: “You have asked all those questions on that platform. Now you come down and let me answer that question on the platform.” The Dahri agreed and descended.
Imam Azam (rahmatullahi alayh) stood up on the platform and gave his answer:
“Allah has now made me ascend (honoured) and made you descend (disgraced).” Upon this answer, too, the atheist was speechless and left the debate disgraced.
