It is an honour for us to support the Knights of the Southern Cross Victoria in supporting the Catholic Military Ordinariate of Australia in providing funds to support the education of Australia’s military chaplains, and it was our honour to be present for Bishop Stuart Hall’s consecration as the new Bishop of the CMOA at St Patrick’s Cathedral here in Melbourne. We wish him all the best in this new vital ministry.

GUEST SPEAKER- PETA CREDLIN AO
Peta Credlin AO is an Australian political commentator, former senior political advisor and lawyer. She is best known for her influential role in politics and the media.

Her most notable role was serving as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Tony Abbott from 2013 to 2015. She played a key role in shaping government policy and stategy during Abbott’s leadership.

After leaving politics Peta transitioned into the media. She became a Sky News Australia host. In this role she is known for her strong viewpoints and commentary on national and international political issues.

COMPERE- CHRIS DICKINSON
Chris worked in the Catholic Education System throughout his teaching career. He has been a physical education teacher, music teacher, classroom teacher, deputy principal and principal. He has many treasured memories of his time working in Catholic schools. Chris is now retired and his leisure time includes golf, breeding and syndicating Thoroughbreds, following the St Kilda Football Club and spending time with family and friends.

Congratulations go to Bishop-elect Stuart Hall, currently Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral Melbourne, on his appointment as the Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Australia. A former Royal Australian Navy chaplain, Bishop-elect Hall will be responsible for the Catholic chaplains of the Australian Defence Force, and the spiritual needs of the Catholic service personnel that they serve.

Catholic Chaplaincy in the ADF is an often overlooked but vital ministry, as without chaplains many Catholic service personnel struggle with their faith, particularly on overseas deployments. It is also critical to ensure all Catholic chaplaincy positions are occupied, otherwise the will go to other faith denominations.

The Knights of the Southern Cross Victoria, through the The Knights of the Southern Cross Priests Support And Education Fund, support our ADF Catholic chaplains and their education, with one fifth of the funds raised through our flagship event, The Knights of the Southern Cross Victoria Archbishop’s Dinner 2026 going to the Military Ordinariate.

We wish Bishop-elect Hall all the best on this vital appointment.

Our prayerful congratulations to Monsignor Stuart Hall, Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral Melbourne, who Pope Leo XIV has tonight appointed as Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Australia. 🙏

Following his ordination in 1987, Bishop-elect Hall served as assistant priest in the Catholic parishes of Essendon, Frankston and Preston. He then spent more than two decades as a chaplain in the Royal Australian Navy—including operational deployments to Timor-Leste and the Middle East—before returning to Melbourne in 2017 and serving as parish priest of Malvern and Malvern East. He was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in 2023 and also serves as parish priest of St Augustine's Parish, Melbourne.

‘While we will greatly miss him in Melbourne, we give thanks to God for his generous response to this new call to serve the Church,’ said Archbishop Peter A Comensoli.
