➰A follow-up from the previous post with some info on Swan Hill’s original Cemetery . ➰

Before July 1860, Swan Hill had no official cemetery. It is believed that the town’s earliest burials took place on a small plot of land near the site of the present-day flour mill silos on the south-east corner of Curlewis and Pye Streets.

At least three people were buried there, including a man who died while suffering from delirium, a young Welshman employed by local grocers Sparkes & Perkins, and James Dennis, a coach driver who drowned in Lake Boga after his horses bolted and the coach ran into the lake.

These early burials remind us of Swan Hill’s pioneering days and the rich history that existed before the establishment of our official cemetery.

Final post highlighting the Swan Hill Cemetery Trust Cemeteries

Swan Hill Memorial Park was surveyed and commissioned in the 1850’s. The surveyor was Mr Robert McPherson who ironically became the cemetery’s first internment in 1859 with the first trustees not appointed until July 1860.

Up until this time, the village of Swan Hill had no official cemetery, although it is believed that an unofficial site was located north of the Swan Hill City Bowling greens, north east corner of Curlewis and Pritchard Streets.

In the early days the trustees were representatives of the various religious bodies in the district. The first trustees were Duncan Campbell (Presbyterian), Robert Taylor (Presbyterian), Samuel Watson (Church of England), and Benjamin Gummow (Church of England). They had a struggle to eventually find representatives from the Catholics and the Wesleyan’s.

On November 18, 1886 a destructive grass fire ripped through the Cemetery taking all it’s records with it. Even tombstones, constructed of wood were destroyed, leaving the modern secretaries often struggling for information on the past burials of the early days of the cemetery.

The cemetery has had many sextons and trust members come and go over the years. Most often giving their own flavour to the current records. In the early days the Sexton was in charge of everything from record keeping to digging the graves. It was demanding physical work, and accurate record-keeping was often secondary to the many practical duties required .

Today modern day record-keeping systems and grave digging machinery have transformed the way cemeteries are managed. While the tools have changed , the commitment remains the same - to respectfully care for those entrusted to us and to preserve the history or our cummunity for future generations

A service to celebrate the life of Colin Wilson will be held at The Grain Shed Church of Christ, 2 King St, Swan Hill, on Thursday August 6th, 2026 , commencing at 1:30P.M

At the conclusion of the service the cortege will proceed to Swan Hill Memorial Park, Lawn E Garden Section (off Wattie Street).

The funeral service for Ivan John McNeill will be held at Uniting Church Swan Hill on Friday 7th August commencing at 10.30am. Burial will follow at Swan Hill Memorial Park Methodist Section.

A Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of Mary ‘Joyce’ Phyland will be offered at St Mary's Catholic Church, Swan Hill on Friday 7th August commencing 1.30pm.
Followed by burial at Swan Hill Memorial Park, Lawn A section. (Enter via Coronation Ave )

➰Our Cemeteries- Ultima➰
Second of three posts on Swan Hill Cemetery Trust Cemeteries

Ultima in its early days was a thriving town with three hospitals, four churches, three grocery stores, as well as coffee palaces, blacksmiths, a barber, butcher, post office, school, court house, and all the other businesses a thriving town needed.

6 acres of land was granted for the Ultima Cemetery in 1912 by the then hotel keeper Mr Mark Brooks. His own daughter, Mary Ann Button, was the first to be interred into the cemetery on 18th September 1912. The cemetery was then gazetted as a Cemetery on the 10th day of March 1913.

The Swan Hill Cemetery Trust was appointed the management of The Ultima Public Cemetery in April 2019. It continues the tradition of providing a peaceful place of rememberance while caring for this important part of the district's history .

🌳 National Tree Day – Celebrating 30 Years 🌳

Established in 1996, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. What began as a community initiative has grown into Australia’s largest tree planting and nature care event.
On National Tree Day on 26 July we are recognising the important role trees play within our cemeteries. They provide beauty, shade and a peaceful place for reflection, creating a natural connection between remembrance and the environment.
Pictured is the ANZAC Commemoration Tree in Non -Denominal Section in Swan Hill Memorial Park.

Trees also offer a gentle and meaningful way to memorialise loved ones. Our tree memorial areas provide several options, with sites available having two or four places , allowing families to create a lasting tribute in a serene natural setting.

➰Our Cemeteries- Lake Boga➰
First of three posts on Swan Hill Cemetery Trusts Cemeteries.

Lake Boga was named by Surveyor General Thomas Mitchell in 1836. The settlement however didn’t take shape until the 1890s when the railway line to Swan Hill was developed which ran past the lake. Township blocks were established and sold, and the school was opened in 1892, the general store in 1893, and in 1894 a need for a cemetery evolved.

Alexander Gray, James A. Robertson, Arthur Scown, James Scott and Benjamin Tripcony were the first trustees on the board of the cemetery trust. It is interesting to note that some of these names are still very local to Lake Boga today.

Swan Hill Cemetery Trust commenced the day to day running of the Lake Boga Cemetery in July 2020. The Lake Boga Cemetery Trust board remains, seeing to the future of the Lake Boga Cemetery and the upkeep and maintenance to the grounds.

Although it is believed that there were quite a few “unofficial” burials into the cemetery before this time, Florence was the first official burial on 15th September 1894. She was the 5-month-old baby of the storekeepers Alexander and Janet (May) Gray. Alex, shortly after the passing of his little girl, became one of the first trustees of the cemetery.

A poignant reminder of the personal commitment many early residents made to ensuring their community had a place of dignity, rememberance and lasting care .
