On 26th May, we were honoured to receive a special gift from the community of Ursula Frayne Catholic College in Perth, Australia. Ursula Frayne Catholic College

The gift was presented to our CEO Mary O’Donovan by Greg LeGuier, who travelled from Perth to Dublin on behalf of the college community.

The gift Greg carried was a Message Stick (see photo) commissioned especially by Ursula Frayne Catholic College for the Catherine’s House in Dublin.

It was created by Cheryl Lennox-Bradley, a Nanda and Yamitji woman from Maya Country in Western Australia, whose own life has been deeply shaped by the Mercy tradition. Cheryl spent seven years at the Catherine McAuley Centre in Western Australia and completed her secondary education at Mercedes College, the first Catholic school established in the state.

It's Poetry Day Ireland today and the theme for this year is Home.

We thought the theme was a perfect match for this poem by Mary Wickham rsm which she wrote as we closed Catherine's House in Dublin for essential works.

In her beautifully and cleverly crafted poem, Mary permits the house to anticipate what will come with the temporary closure of Mercy International Centre for refurbishment work. She also allows the house to look back and to look to the future. She gifts us a reassurance from the house that she will look after all the treasures too.

You can read the poem on our website here (link in bio)

Statement from the MIA Board and Members Meetings May 2026

The past week has seen the Mercy International Association Members (Congregation Leaders from around the world) and the Directors of the Board of Mercy International Association (MIA), in Dublin for both joint and separate meetings in the service of MIA’s present and future mission and operations.

It was a wonderful opportunity for all to receive an update from CEO, Mary O’Donovan, and the Executive staff of MIA, on the progress on the essential fire remediation works in Mercy International Centre (Baggot Street). The works are on track to be completed in time for the house to be opened up again in late June, for visitors, pilgrimages and programs. Much has been achieved!

In our contemplating together the upcoming 200th Anniversary, in September 2027, of the Opening of the House of Mercy on Baggot Street, there was recognition that whilst much has been done in Mercy over those 200 years, there is still much more to do and “We can never say ‘It is enough!’” (Catherine McAuley). In this spirit, the Members and Directors took time in looking to the future of MIA and the invitation this moment is offering us, to strengthen MIA in its mission for the next 200 years and beyond!

This statement is offered by Peta Goldburg rsm and Maria Lawton rsm on behalf of the Members and the Board of MIA. Peta is President of the Members and Maria is the newly-appointed Chair of the MIA Board.

The former Sisters of Mercy convent site in Singleton has now been formally transferred to the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

“This site has been part of the fabric of local life so many here today carry personal memories of this convent, the good people in it, and the good works to come out of it.” Bishop Michael Kennedy.
