A prayer for our city. Not sure what to pray? These words, used by others, may be helpful for you too, to pray yourself or with your family.
Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
we mourn and grieve the events at Bondi on Sunday evening.
“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18).
Be near to all who are broken-hearted,
and uphold those whose spirits are crushed by shock, loss, and fear.
We pray for the families of those who have died,
for those who are injured,
and for all whose lives have been deeply affected.
Deal graciously with those recovering in hospital,
provide them with expert medical care and surround them and their loved ones.
We give thanks for the courage and kindness of those who acted to save lives.
Be with them now as they process what they have seen and done,
and grant them rest and healing.
Grant wisdom to community leaders, politicians, the police, and the justice system in Australia
that their work may promote justice, calm, peace and the common good.
“Mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15)
We pray for safety and peace for the Jewish community in Sydney and across Australia. Where there is hatred or division, turn hearts towards understanding and unity and care.
For all who are anxious or fearful, may we find rest in your Son, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. And speed the day when violence ceases, justice is upheld, and your peace is known among all people; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
