Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday evening) begins at 6.15pm. Shabbat Shacharit (Saturday morning) begins at 10am.

Earlier this year, we received an update from our Soferet on her progress with writing our Sefer Torah, which we can now share with you! Hanna Klebansky is progressing well (she's completed even more since this video was recorded) and we're looking forward to sharing the scroll with you in March next year. More info to come, but we hope you will join us for this special Torah Project celebration!

What a beautiful afternoon of light, learning and connection!

On Sunday, we were delighted to host a Diwali and Chanukah cultural exchange, celebrating two traditions centering on light. From music and classical dance to lighting the lamp together, and a conversation between Rabbi Allison Conyer and Sister Maureen about the meaning of light in our traditions, it was a wonderful afternoon of sharing stories, asking questions and getting to know one another.

Thank you to Melbourne Diwali, the Brahma Kumaris and the Hindu-Jewish Community Leadership Forum for helping make this special gathering possible, and to everyone who joined us. It was a special opportunity to learn about others' traditions, while also sharing our own - making friends through shared similarities and connections.

Alon Weisman, one of our students who is currently working towards her bat mitzvah in December with Cantor Laloum, and her family, recently visited our Soferet, Hanna, in Israel, as part of her journey. A long-standing TBI family, her mother and siblings both celebrated their simchah with us and her grandparents are Jack and Fay Bock. Fay is working on the embroidery for our new Torah scroll's mantle, and Jack was a previous treasurer and continues to volunteer helping with TBI bequests. So, it was a special moment to have them visit as our Torah Project truly is bringing generations together.

During the visit, Hanna was finishing the book of Leviticus, and Alon and her family had the privilege of watching the scribe actually writing a piece of the living Torah. This was Alon's first opportunity to actually touch, feel and experience a Torah scroll, and a unique experience of a Torah scroll in the making - probably a once in a lifetime experience!

This Torah will be read for generations to come (we hope that it will see Alon's great grandchildren!), and Alon has had an opportunity to participate in its creation.

Three years on from October 7 2023, one of the greatest tragedies and loss of life in our history, our prayers are with the victims and their families.

Israel, the Diaspora and the world was forever changed that day, and we wanted to share a story from where it started - Uri Palti, one of our members, was in Israel on this day three years ago, experiencing the fear, confusion, shock and chaos that took hold.

Today, we commemorate the lives lost, recognise lives that were changed, and share our hope for the future and for peace. Zichronam livracha.

With our last services for Simchat Torah and Sh'mini Atzeret concluding over the weekend, we wrap up the High Holy Day period! It's been such a beautiful time celebrating together, and we would like to thank everyone for attending, volunteering, helping out and making this time so special.

Both our Family Activities and the services this past Shabbat were a fantastic celebration of Torah and a great way to finish an incredible year. It's always a pleasure to come together, dance and celebrate the beginning of a new cycle, while also recognising our honourees - congratulations again!

Our theme this year was "Together We Rise: Community, Courage, Compassion", highlighting how coming together strengthens our community, and we truly felt that.

As we unroll the Torah this evening for Simchat Torah and prepare to begin a new cycle, we wanted to highlight another Torah Project family. This week, we're sharing Sol Green's story and his unique connection to TBI.

Sol’s family connection to TBI includes several generations of the Green family and thus, the continual link to the TBI community is very important to him. Sol explained how his family lineage traces back to his great great grandmother in London and in 1853 she sailed to Australia with Caroline Chisholm as a free settler.

Today, the Torah Project confirms the continual linkage to his past and his family's ongoing connection to TBI. Sol regularly leins at services and is thrilled to be involved with the project.

The High Holy Days aren't quite over yet! Celebrate the unrolling of the Torah this weekend as we commemorate Simchat Torah and Sh'mini Atzeret, with Family activities in the afternoon and a joyous service to follow. Check out everything we've got planned.

Registration is essential for our Family Activities this Friday 2 October at 4.30pm. Don't miss out on a fun afternoon of Torah themed board game inspired activities, with food, games, music and celebration. RSVP at http://tbi.org.au/highholydays/rsvp

Our Simchat Torah service on Friday evening will then celebrate our honourees and the new Torah cycle - come sing, dance and rejoice with us! We'll also be rounding out the High Holy Days with a Sh'mini Atzeret Shacharit Service & Yizkor on Saturday morning.

We had such a fun time kicking off our events in the Sukkah and celebrating Sukkot on Friday with our Family Activities event. With a "Shake it Off!" theme, we enjoyed activities to get everyone in the spirit - we shook the lulav, smelled the etrog, did some fun craft activities and enjoyed some yummy food to celebrate the harvest festival - it was a great time for the whole family.
