St Martin’s is an Anglican parish located in Melbourne’s inner suburb of South Yarra, about a 100 metre walk from Hawksburn Station. We are an inclusive and friendly parish with a servant’s heart for our community.
‘Hawksburn’ is one of those rare places in Australia. We might say, it’s a place that never became a suburb in its own right (but became part of South Yarra). However, the locals are ve

ry proud of it. St Martin’s is one of the few entities that embodies this local history. The church was founded in 1883 as a ‘chapel of ease’ for those who worked in the homes of South Yarra and Toorak. Soon it became a ‘parish’ in its own right and has had a rich history. It was one of the first Anglican churches to really embrace wearing ‘Anglo-Catholic’ vestments (the things that the priest wears in worship) during its services in the 1880s. Our current aim as a parish is to try and express our Anglican traditions afresh in the 21st Century. We have an important relationship with our neighbour Christ Church South Yarra and strive to do as much as we can together. We also value the relationships we have with the local Baptist and Roman Catholic churches as well. We have a form of worship every day, except Monday. Some days these are services with Holy Communion, other days we have morning prayer, often led by a parishioner. We are a social bunch, going to the movies, eating out and always have a coffee or tea after a service. On Sunday, the 10am service is followed by coffee, tea and (more often than not) a cake, as we love celebrating birthdays and other occasions. Why not come and check us out for yourself and even if you are lost and came by mistake, welcome to St Martin’s!

After almost four years at Hawksburn, it has been announced that our vicar, Fr Luke Hopkins, will be moving on from St Martin's in early February. Fr Luke has been appointed as the chaplain to Trinity College Melbourne (part of the University of Melbourne and University of Divinity). Please keep Fr Luke and Alice in your prayers as they make the transition to this new ministry. Fr Luke's last Sunday in the parish will be the 6th of February, 2022.

Legends surround the birth and childhood of many figures who afterwards become important. But by comparison with other legends about other figures, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke look quite restrained — except, of course, in the matter where the real interest centres.
