Those who are close to me would know how much I value honouring others, especially those in leadership or position of authority.
Australia is one of countries I have lived in where I have experienced honour and respect for our leaders is so low to the point of non existent.
As a result, this attitude has made its way into the church. As I read Romans 13, Paul gives clear instructions on this subject, there was no exception to the rule, this instruction was to believer in the church at Colossae, I am sure Paul would have known they were already, loving each other as Christ instructed, I am sure the leaders were already humble, I am sure the leaders were doing their best, But Paul still instructed them to honour and respect their leaders and those in authority. Why? Because all positions of authority is God instituted, but not necessarily God led.
When we as Christians show or give honour and respect to those in authority, and unbelievers witness this we are giving glory and praise to God.
I also see a false humility in some leaders who push away or stop others who are showing them honour and respect, yes, we don’t go asking and pushing people to do it, and that’s what Jesus condemns in Matthew 23. Jesus never outrightly condemns showing respect and honour.
In my leadership and mentorship this is something I start with, it is something I highly encourage. I don’t just honour those in authority, it goes in every direction, above, middle and below.
We give glory and praise to God, But we honour and respect people. If you hear me call someone pastor this or that, I am not putting them on a pedestal or think they are holier than me, But rather I am publicly saying I affirm the gift and call on your life as a shepherd within the church, I give you permission to correct me, to discipline me, to speak wisdom into my life. I submit to your authority under Christ.
Pastors you are shepherd of God’s folk, start leading, teaching, guiding and encouraging your congregation on how to show honour and respect in a society soo lost and confused on what it means to show honour and respect.
Is this an area you are struggling with, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you.
