Thomas Aquinas said love is “to will the good of the other.”

Christianity asks of its disciples to consider a very difficult and costly exercise. To love your neighbour as yourself.

Paul tells us in Romans that the law and grace are held in tension and in this paradox, the law is fulfilled in love.

Love costs us AND fills us.
It is a costly call to be a Christian - but it is worth it.

Even priests enjoy a Pepsi Max! 🎉

On the one year anniversary of my commissioning to Singleton Anglican, I reflect on the joy of costly love.

The life of a priest, and every Christian, is a call to costly love - one that takes up the cross and follows Jesus.

That cross is the risk that, when we love, we risk opening our heart. By opening our heart we risk vulnerability.

But love is what makes life worth living.
It’s a risk I am willing to take.

Thank you for your love Singleton, and for allowing me to love you.

Christianity is a cathedral. ⛪️

2000 years has given the church mysticism, poetry, law, philosophy, history, textual criticism.

It is not a bland feel good exercise. Though it can give us a great deal of hope and comfort! But the hope it gives us is a robust hope. Not wishful thinking.

The Old and New Testaments are deeply intertwined.

In Ordinary Time, we see this pattern emerge through recapitulation theology - the idea that Jesus is the fulfillment of all scripture.

It has been amazing to host the Hunter Christian SRE Encouragement Day here at All Saints.

Kate Baker from Newcastle Anglican is leading the day, while our amazing volunteers have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to provide hospitality and admin!

We pray for our SRE teachers that they may be encouraged today and be renewed in their vocations.

Do you collapse the tension? 😬

By that I mean, so you seem easy answers when something is complex? Or are you comfortable sitting with complexity? 🤔 or is there a third thing?

Being uncomfortable with tension and uncertainty is natural, but leaning into it is key to growth.

Christianity, like muscle growth at the gym, requires tension to develop depth and strength.

Today we explored the mystery of Jesus Christ as God, the complexity and simplicity of faith, and how paradox leads to a third way of thinking and spiritual maturity.

The Mothers Union Prayer Baton is a traveling symbol used during the 150 Ways in 150 Days campaign by our diocesan branch of Mothers Union.

It moves from one local branch and parish to another to connect members through shared prayers, local stories, and fellowship.

Members of Singleton Mothers Union handed on the prayer baton to the Mothers Union delegates from Maitland Parish!

In around 170AD Irenaeus of Lyon, a Greek Bishop, considered who Jesus was and concluded that Jesus’ life ‘recapitulates’ the story of humanity - in that Jesus lived the perfect life where humanity repeatedly gets it wrong.

In Genesis 37, the story of Joseph and his brothers shows us the outcomes of jealousy and rejection.

The Cross of Christ in a similar way shows the cost of rejection. But Jesus’ death and resurection takes the old ways of humanity and transforms it.

That means the entirety of the human experience has been made holy.

150 Ways in 150 Days

The Prayer Baton changed hands outside St Anne's Gresford today, about halfway between Gloucester and Singleton.

Leonie went, as a bride, to Singleton 1969 to 1972. Stuart, her late husband, was one of the two curates attached to All Saints. During those years, Leonie led the Young Members Department of Mothers Union, supporting young families in the parish. Marianne is a lifelong local Singleton girl. Over a coffee they shared memories and news of the Parish, before going their separate ways.

Each handover strengthens the bonds of fellowship across our branches and reminds us that we are part of one Mothers Union family, supporting one another as we seek to share God's love in our local communities and beyond.

Singleton Grandparents as Parents or GAPS supports grandparents in our community that may be undertaking a primary caregiving role with their grandchildren.

On Thursday, Michelle from Singleton Salvation Army delivered hampers for our GAPS members! Local member Dan Repacholi was also present at the meeting to hear about GAPS and the experiences of its members.

We are very grateful for the GAPS team, Michelle and Dan for a wonderful Thursday together!

It is offered in schools across Australia by dedicated volunteers who undergo rigorous training and study.

Last night at the Education Week Awards, Helen Crumbley was recognised for her work in SRE in several local schools.

We give thanks for the ministry of SRE and our valued SRE teachers!
