Each year before Easter, the Church gathers for the Chrism Mass, one of the most significant liturgies outside of Christmas and Easter.
At this Mass, Bishop Brian blesses the sacred oils that will be used in the sacraments throughout the year, in Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders. These oils are then taken back to parishes across the diocese, a simple but powerful sign of our unity as one Church.
Historically, this blessing took place during the Holy Thursday Mass, reflecting the institution of the priesthood. Today, it is celebrated as its own liturgy, but that connection remains at its heart. The Chrism Mass brings together the bishop and priests of the diocese in a visible expression of their unity, as they renew their commitment to serve God and his people.
The lay faithful are warmly invited to attend. This is a rare opportunity to gather as a diocesan family, to pray together, and to glimpse the fullness of the Churchโs sacramental life in one place.
